Banana plugs are used for convenience, not performance. They will actually degrade the performance to some extent, but that extent is extremely small if you put the connectors on correctly.
I personally like how easy it is to disconnect the speaker wires in my system when I can just pull a banana plug out of a binding post rather than unscrew the post and pull out the wire. This is especially true if you are reaching behind a speaker or entertainment center.
