This may have been asked several times here, but could someone guide me as to why banana plugs are so expensive? The cheapest I found was $6 a pair.

Because they're really good.

Go to Parts Express, Newegg or Monoprice.

Look in the deals area. There are a couple of threads for 98 cent ones from monoprice.

I just received my 5 pairs of closed end banana plugs from monoprice at $1.91 per pair.

They fit nicely and are good quality too

Here are some really good ones, they have double set screws, easy to hook up an make a great connection, They are $7 a pair and well worth the price.

There are some cheaper ones available from Monoprice that work well with smaller gauge wire (18 or 16 ..maybe 14 gauge); but they are not screw set.

I usually get the locking GLS plugs from speakerepair.com. They run sales from time to time (promo code) where you can pick them up for around $3/pair. The non-locking ones cost a little less.

2 observations re: the closed-end monoprice banana plugs:

1. They are ideal for 14G and under if you ask me (depending on the thickness of the insulation). Using 16G monoprice speaker wire isnt snug enough to fit tightly.

2. If I had to do it again...I would prolly get the locking plugs. Putting my speaker wire in the mono nanners and splitting the wire to mushroom around the end of the plug went against everything Ive ever known about speaker wire. Can't explain the feeling...but it just didnt feel right :p

2.5. 16G wire is too thin anyway...so I will most likely be doing it all again with 12G and locking plugs in the next few days

I got those on Forest Man's review, and now I'm sold on locking plugs!

What I like about these is that I am led to believe that they are easier to grip/tighten than the unique plugs (which are smooth).

I use the open screw banana plugs from monoprice, they look great and fit tightly, couldn't be happier with them, especially for the $.98 price tag.
