That is sickening. I agree, a prison sentence is justified in this case. I would like to see them get fined and have to pay all the costs that were involved in the "rescue" as well as if any money received from doing interviews with the media taken away.

6 years behind bars? For a first offence? Why, child molesters get less in VT and NFL players get less for vehicular homicide while DUI in FL!

When this goes to court and if the mom and dad are found guilty I doubt they get any type of prison sentence. I could see them getting a massive fine and probation. What would happen to all the kids if they go to jail?

I imagine it'll get pleaded down with some stuff dismissed. If the parents actually have to serve jail time there may be relatives to take in the kids or foster care. It was a pretty sharp looking balloon though :D

I don't agree with any prison time. This is one of the reason's the country is in so much debt! Remember, it costs $35,000-$45,000 per year to imprison someone. For non violent crime? This is absurd.

A means of punishment should be used that keeps the person productive, yet makes the point clear that the behavior will not be tolerated. I don't exactly what this would be - but clearly the answer is not simply 'imprison' someone for just any crime, especially non-violent ones....

I wonder how much was the estimated cost for rescue inititiave that was implemented for the rescue of what they thought was a child up in the sky in a balloon? Half million, million dollars; probably more than the cost to imprison these people for even the max 6 years. Anyways, I see any jail time highly unlikely in this case if this goes to court and they are convicted.

How about 6 years of community service or until all costs have been worked off?

I agree with this as long as they stay away from my community. what an incredibly selfish waste of resources by an attention whore father and a braindead mother.

I was at home that day and I litterally watched from beginning to end. when it landed and he wasn't in there, I just had a feeling.

These people are trash and they should be treated as such. To call 911 crying and begging for help as a scam should be a criminal offense. I think there should be jail time and 5 years minimum community service. The most important stipulation should be that under no circumstance can they ever participate in or profit from any type of media deal book, TV, radio, internet, whatever.

This story is so appalling I don't even know where to begin. I hope they get the maximum penalty of six years behind bars and $500,000. That should eat up most of the funds they get from the media to tell their story.
They are getting charged with misdormeaners probably just have to pay a fine. What they need to do is take the kids away from them
