So the last few days I have noticed the sound from movies and tv shows sounded like bad internet audio. You know that 'from the bottom of a barrel' sound. Kind of bright, tinny internet warble, and whistle/hiss like. Sorry, I can't quit explain it.

I went in to the menu on my Diretv set top box and turned the Dolby Digital 'off'. The only options are Dolby 'on' or 'off'. When off, it defaults to PCM output.
It seems better, but only with some shows.

Could it be something in my receiver, or is it the Directv STB?

I was thinking of doing a hard reset of the Directv STB.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Throw a dvd on with a DD soundtrack, see if it's the decoder.

This issue seems to be better. Only some channels and not consistent. No noise when watching Blu Ray or DVD.

Better than it was though.

Seriously, I have no life.

I would not put any faith in cable TV audio transmissions and for that matter the TV programs. For a long time there was serious audio issues with CW on some of their programs, like the noise floor was way high and it came through frequently.
It seems to be better now though.

This is also a very good point, I've had issues like that as well. Try checking against another TV, call a friend maybe?

If the issue is hardware, it's sounding like there's a decent chance it's the cable box.

CW programming seems plagued with problems here as well. Audio and video.
What had me concerned was the noise on an HD HBO channel. Hoping it's not my receiver. Talked to Directv, and they would send me a new receiver if I pay shipping.

I'm beginning to think it's a combination of STB and the networks.

It never hurts to check all connections. I've had some problems with monoprice cables being too stiff and working into a poor connection over time. I resolved it by sliding the collar down and pulling apart the R and L wires about 6" down each side. This way one of the wires is not sprung so close to the other so as to loosen the connection.
