Back surround speakers question?

Would placement 9 feet behind viewing position be too far?

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but from my own experience the surround back channels don't get that strong of a signal so nine feet away might be a bit far. However you could probably just turn only the surround back channels up on your receiver until you feel the sound is right. Or make fine adjustments using the speaker distance and all of that good stuff. I just use the auto MCACC on my receiver so if you have something similar you can run it will probably compensate for the nine foot distance.

Sounds a little far but you may be able to get away with it....how good of speakers are they....alot of surrounds are small (and overpriced) and don't push that well....but if you turn the output up on them and use a spl to get it right (you may have to really crank them up +5-10...)....

You'll just have to experiment with them.....I know you don't want to install them and not be happy with their sound so try setting one ontop of a ladder about where you want it on the wall and try it out first......

Cosmetically, sometimes you just can't place them where they would be ideally suited.....if they're not loud enough you may want to consider upgrading them....but you'll prob. be able to get them loud enough... are they bipoles or dipoles?

They are just a couple of JVC HTIB surround speakers mounted on stands,
which might be ok for handling the limited sound effects that are assigned
to the rear speakers or I could do what I originally intended which was to have BIC 62 LRCs allround as sometimes the RXs "all channel stereo" option sounds good

How far away are the rest of your speakers? I don't think it sounds undo-able at all unless the rest of the speakers are right on top of you.

The distance of the side speakers is the problem, the fronts are 9 feet and I have a maximum of 9 feet available at the back, but only a maximum of 3 feet for the side speakers also we have recliners which my wife reclines fully when watching a film and directly behind them is the dining table. I
could locate the rear speakers about 3 feet behind the recliners for HT and
move them when they are not in use. I thought of having them angled up to the ceiling behind the chairs. I really wish my room was wider:rolleyes:

I always hear guys say, "well surrounds really don't do that much", or "they only provide about 15% of what you hear".....I disagree! I think good surrounds add alot to the listening pleasure and can make a BIG impact on the overall experience. When you hear surrounds that are good and set up well......you agree!

I wouldn't recommend setting up small surrounds that far out.....is it do-able? Yes....will it be lacking? Yes.....I would seek some other alternatives apart from having to move them on stands each time as well.....The sides are more important than the rears though......my 2 cents

I am beginning to think that it would be best to reasign my 2 BIC 62 LRCs
fronts as presence speakers(after getting a Yamaha Receiver, replace them with BIC DV64's for fronts and keep my side speakers (JBL Cinevision) which are a vast improvement on my JVC HTIB speakers
and use 2 of my JVC HTIB or upfiring BICS as back surrounds

Decisions, decisions. The best laid plans... I agree with most that 9' may be a bit too far away. May I suggest: Come up with a plan (revised), re-work it, instill it, then tweak it. Your third post may be the answer. Position your rears 3' behind (on stands?) for ht, and at all all other times, simply have them set aside. Welcome to the world of let's get it all (ht and listening room) into an everyday space. But then, much of the fun of it is the tweaking. Welcome to AH ArchieH.
