I would love to hear any comments from owners of the 684s.

Or comments from B&W owners in gereral, how is the product, mainly how do YOU think they size up to Paradigm.

I own Paradigm Monitor 9s v.6, and will be demoing the 684s in home side by side, thanks to University Audio hear in Madison, WI.

i should change my handle to "indecisive".:)

From what I've had my ears on, I wasn't really impressed with anything in the 600 series from B&W, but to put things in perspective, I already had my Signatures when I was listening to them. Not really a fair comparison. The first time I heard the 802D's I didn't care for the tweeter. They were being driven by a high end Pioneer AVR and just didn't sound right to me. After listening to them at another dealer, I have changed my opinion. I have come to appreciate the 802D's, but at twice the price of my S8's, I don't feel it's worth the extra money to change (and I can't afford it anyway).

I listen to them side by side, monitor 9's and B&W with NAD Master Series Equipment. I liked the B&W better.
I also felt that the 684 had a tighter bass than the 683's
I listen to the 800 Diamond with HTM2 and matching rears, REL Sub.
Amazing! So I knew I wanted a sound towards those that I could afford. Of curse you cant compare 600's with 800 never ever ever! but, B&W had "that" sound, not Paradigm.
Then, I listen to the 684 with HTM62 and 685 in rears with a Mcintosh MX136 and MC207 for movies, and the stereo using their Mcintosh MT10 turntable and a tube DAC. So I was Sold!
I got 684, 686, and HTM61. DT Reference Sub. (its not your regular supercube)
Let us know which one you picked!:)

oppmann99,

It's my understanding the pioneer is a bright sounding receiver, and B&W tend to be brighter then the rest.

The general consensus around here is that amplifiers/receivers don't have their own sound. I am in that group, as I haven't been able to distinguish between different makes during any auditions I have experienced. If a mainstream amplifier (Pioneer, Yamaha, Marantz, Onkyo, etc) is not overdriven, you will not hear any differences. Some esoteric "audiophile" makes might influence the FR - but only if something has been deliberately done to colourthe sound. And, by "coloured", I mean inaccurate.

So, I wouldn't concern myself too much with the components driving any speakers during a demo, as long as the amp has sufficient power to drive them.

On that note, the B & W's might present a heavier load to an amplifier than the Monitor 9's, so keep that in mind.

If you'll be comparing them, side-by-side, in your home - excellent! I would recommend that you get a friend or family member to assist. It's unlikely that you'll be able to replicate a proper DBT, but you can take some measures to reduce bias during your listening.

Try placing the speakers from both pairs close to each other in their normal placement positions. They'll probably influence the sound of each other, due to diffraction, but they'll be equally handicapped, so I wouldn't be overly concerned by that. You could have the speaker positions swapped between listening tests - but auditory (if that's the correct word) memory is extremely short. You need to be able to switch between speakers very quickly, in order to make a valid comparison.

You should sit blindfolded in the listening position, while the other person switches back and forth between each pair ("A" and "B"), at random. Due to the different sensitivities of these two models, he/she should vary the volume between switches, so that you aren't influenced, or at least minimally influenced, by the "louder is better" phenomenon.

I know, it ain't exactly scientific, but at home what else can you do? You've expressed that you aren't completely happy with the 9's, which is fair enough. However, that can subconciously influence your preference during a comparison. The key is not knowing which speakers are playing at any given point during testing.

I'll be the first to say, that the 683's/684's look much nicer than the 9's. I wouldn't want that to influence judgement of the sound quality of each speaker. Unless, of course, the appearance of your speakers is important to you. That would put a whole different spin on the situation....

+1 to oppman.

I found the B&W 6xx series a really poorly made, boring speaker. It's mainly the name + shipping from overseas you are paying for IMO.
The good news is that you can get much more for that price.
Im not sure about the paradigm monitor, but i DO know that the studio's can be pretty cheap if you pick up a set used. They have a VERY accurate response (which may or may not be your cup of tea).
I find many people like their upper frequencies a bit rolled off with a bit of a bump in bass.
What I would suggest though, is listen to B&W's + Paradigms then go outside and listen to a few other speakers outside of them. Perhaps Revel, PSB, etc.
You will know when you love a speaker! I was 101% set on Def Tech BP7000's until i heard the S8's. It may be a drawn out process, but trust me, its worth the time! Best of luck!

Paradigm, Bower and Wilkins, so different.
I thought the Monitors were better looking than the 68Xs
But to me, they were so different.
Can't compare. You either like one or the other.
I listen to PSB a lot in a dealer that had Totems, I actually like the Totems much better. They are so small and sound so big.
Personally, If you were to give free studios or 68xs, I take the 68xs.
Well, I take the Studios, and trade them for CMs.
Im not a B&W fan, I just like the sound coming from them.
I wished I liked the sound from the Paradigms, to me, they look way better.
Unless we talking about the 800s.
But if it was for looks, and money was not a problem,I'll get Kef's MUONs
