Which are better all around for musical sound. Cnet rates Apherion the best yet I don't see them mentioned much on this forum?

I bought the Aperion 532s 5.1 system. I ended up sending it back. I could not get the sound I wanted from the speakers. They sounded a little thin and lacking in mid bass. I'm using a Yammaha 2500 receiver. It's a shame because the build quality is excellent and the speakers are really attractive. Mine had the cherry veneer. Aperion's customer service is excellent as well. The tech went through my receiver's setting's with me and was able to improve the sound, just not enough. They were also cool about taking the speakers back, they emailed me UPS labels and gave me a full refund, including shipping both ways.

I haven't heard the Axioms. I've read some posts describing them as "bright" so I'm looking elsewhere. I'm currently shopping for towers for the fronts. I don't think sats, in general, provide a full enough sound for my tastes in music.

CNET is not exactly known as an "audio" savvy site.

I saw the comments about the axiom's being bright as well. It seems like most people here REALLY like the axiom's. (I don't own them and haven't heard them). I guess what I'm getting is that I wouldn't necassarily discount them because of a couple of comments. What suits one listener (or listening room) may not suit another. The Axioms have also faired very well in the pro reviews here.

UltimateAV.com isn't bad, and the Aperions are actually on their recommended list. They sure are an incredible value.

CNET is more of a gadget freak's site, but I haven't found them to be off the rocker like Consumer Reports. They have endorsed Grado RS-2, Etymotic ER-4p... all absolutely stellar products.

The most rock solid evaluation site is Audio Critic. It isn't free. And their new article output can be sporadic. They tend to evaluate very select landmark products.

The only way to tell if your high frequencies are boosted is calibrate and then to do a FR plot for your setup. Without doing this, you are basing your judgement on memory, personal preference and opinionated suggestions, neither of which help your cause.

Speaker brightness is, in most cases, the result of untreated room response. In come cases it is obvious (bare stone floors/ mirror walls) and in others its not (big screen TV and glass sliding door on opposite wall).

There are other issues regarding annoying sounds coming from speakers. I call them annoying sounds since I think people who don't like a forward sound from their speakers use the term, bright, too loosely. I find that when I'm overly tired or have a headache and my son is watching one of those action/horror DVD's, the sound that I hear can become annoying to me. It probably has something to do with that big window in my living room.

Speaker options

Axiom and Aperion both have great trial period and return policies. You might consider buying a pair of each for an extensive in home demo. Most reviews find the Axioms to be very neutral speakers, however, an acoustically poor hightly reflective room can make a neutral speaker sound bright. Worst case, you return the Axiom's and you are out the shipping.
Depending on your budget, the $200/pair Onix X-LS speakers from av123.com might also be a good option. They will have a $300/pair floorstander version available soon.

I got the Aperions (7.1) after hearing the setup a friend of mine had. Like everyone else, he raved about the quality and customer service - HUGE issues with me, as I recently had some negative experiences with unrelated products. I got a mix of their 6s (front), 5s (rear and center), and in-ceiling (mid). I also got the 8" sub because the 10" was backordered and I was impatient ;) That actually turned out great, though, sounds much bigger than it is. I think the overall sound is crystal clear, even with the in-ceiling ones. I just wish the 6-series center speaker had been available when I got mine since my location (above the 100" screen and in a cabinet) muddies the smaller 5 just a bit. of course, a little more diligent calibration will help, but that will have to wait until my HT room is all finished and I don't have to keep moving things around.

True audiophiles may disagree with me (and my ears may be a little dull from years of drumming), but I think they're equal to, if not superior, to most other stuff in the same price bracket.

Cheers,

Kevin
