axiom m22ti for the college student?

Greetings; I just found this forum while searching the internet for reviews on axiom m22ti speakers. First off, i would appreciate any input from people who actually have them and listen to them; I am a college kid, trying to get a set of relatively nice speakers, although I don't want them to cost a fortune. I occasionally have parties, where loud speakers are important, so I will most likely be getting a sub to accompany these speakers, should I decide to buy them. I don't have much experience when it comes to listening to high end audio equipment; my first set of speakers was a 5.1 klh set that ran me about a hundred bucks; my sony str de575 receiver couldnt even handle. I recently bought a pair of polk m20s, which both blew out during my first party. Luckily circuit city accepted them back the next day (since i mentioned that, my receiver sends out about 50 wats per channel; the main speaker blew, the tweeter still worked. did it just blow because i didnt wear them in? or did i by chance buy the set of 2 defective speakers from the store). Anyways, i read reviews on the axioms, and liked what i read. One of the things that is deterring me from them, is that they are bookshelf speakers, and i am afraid they may get knocked down at a party. Floor standing speakers i think would have much less of a chance to get knocked down. Know dont get me wrong, i will not just use these speakers for parties, I like watching movies a lot, and i recently bought a record player that I am going to be listening to a lot. Other speakers that i were considering were the Fluance SX-HTB set. Also i've been seeing many people being very pleased with paradigm speakers. So basically i would like input from anyone using these speakers, or similarly priced speakers under similar situations. And i definetly hope to use these speakers after my college years, assuming that they survive =)....
thanks,
~michael

I'd get floorstanders if parties are going to be even semi-frequent, and I'd probably stick with something like Fluance or Paradigm's Performance line until you are out of college. I had my Paradigms knocked over by drunks and boneheads back in the day. The Axioms are a step up from the Paradigm Performance line, but I would not plan on driving them with that receiver. Most likely the reason those Polks blew was because the receiver is far too underpowered. Damage is more commonly caused by too little actual power available not too much.

would that receiver be a problem with paradigms or the fluance speakers?

Yes. You need to step up in the quality of your amplification as well as speakers. Cheap, low-powered receivers clip very easily, which can fry speakers. Since you're a student (like me), I'd suggest that you pick up some less expensive speakers that can play loud. I think a pair of Acoustech floorstanders paired with a good sub and a mid-fi receiver would be a good start. What kind of budget are you working with on this project?

I am in the same boat as you. College, limited budget. Luckily for me my roomate left his projector, onkyo receiver, and 5 speaker surround sound system here while he went to Spain. They are in the living room.

For my room, I just bought a Yamaha RX-V2500 receiver (literally unwrapped it 10 mins ago, it's massive) I am also going tomorrow to order a set of Paradigm Studio 20's with stands. From there, after I work a little more and save, and SVS PB-12 ISD/2 is in the mix for me. Thats gonna total around $2400 ($590 receiver, $750 speakers, $1000 Sub) plus a little more for speaker wire, stands, etc. I have read good things about the Axioms, but have never personally heard them.

HOWEVER, if you are not looking to spend a ton, why not get you just a mid level receiver and something like some JBL towers for your parties, and keep yourself a second system in your room? Just a thought. Drunk people don't tend to be too partial to clarity and sound quality, esp judging from the sound of the music in the clubs around here. I am selfish and want the best stuff at my disposal at all times :) so my good system is going in my own room.

If you go bookshelves, maybe look into mounting them on the walls out of range of drunkards, or get some stands and weight them at the bottom. Good luck with whatever you do.

Well my budget all depends. If the speakers i am goign to be getting will be used even after college, and assuming im only getting a sub and floors for now, prolly around 600 bucks? Im gonna try sell my current receiver on ebay to try score some cash for a new receiver as well. I just saw that the polk m20s i tried out at my party be4 went on sale for 60 dollars less; i can pick up a set of them for 160 from circuit city... would those be a good start? The bass seemed to get distorted at very high volumes, but i didnt have them connected to a sub, and i had my receiver set to send the lower frequencies to the front speakers. If i get those speakers with a sub, and then upgrade my receiver, would that be a decent setup? How does the quality of these polk speakers compare to those of say the fluance system?
thanks

You are asking way too much of those Polks. a 6.25" driver rated down to 55Hz. That is why the bass breaks up and they can't handle what you are demanding of them. Generally a fried tweeter is a product of overdriving your amp into clipping.

Look at Klipsch or Cerwin Vega for your loud playing demands.

but the tweeter wasnt what fried, both the tweeters still worked, it was the woofer that stopped working.

Are you saying $600 for reciever, speakers and sub, or just speakers? Just speakers get you some Axioms, if thats your entire budget, better hit up the classifieds and Ebay for some used stuff.

no 600 dollars for some speakers and possibly a sub... i was checking these out also: Athena Technologies F2.2 Speakers, and a set of refurbished infinity primus 250's... might those suit my purpose? Also there are a set of Klipsch - Synergy III 8" speakers at best buy that are open products (right now they are 340 each, but i bet they will go lower, because they have been sitting there for quite a while)...

thanks

Definitly look into Cerwin Vega if your going to be using it for parties. They have pretty good build quality and are just good all around party speakers.

Klipsch is right up their too. Although i think Klipsch sounds better than Cerwin Vega..

Dont forget about JBL either, they got some good stuff too.

Loud floorstanders

Also Check out the BIC Acoustch speakers. They have a horn driven tweater, like Klipsch, so they play loud with a little power.

Here's a second for the Athena speakers. I just purchased a set of the B2.2s and they are awesome. Great looking and sounding. Surprising low frequency reproduction. The F2.2s should be just as nice and can be had for 380.00 a pair. Noice!

I would look in your local classifieds, or craigslist.org and try to find some older klipsch floorstanders (kg series). They will play very loud with very little amounts of power. You can find them in good condition for around $200. They sound great, and are built like tanks, literally. Add a sub for more low end if you need it.
