Axiom M22's + Monoprice 33lb Speaker Mounts = Failure

Before buying the Monoprice mounts I did some searches to see if they would hold my M22's and was not able to find anything. Hopefully this post will keep anybody from making the same mistake in the future.

I got the speaker mounts that Monoprice advertises as supporting up to 33 lbs (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082804&p_id=3011&seq=1&format=2) for $9.00, figuring that if they didn't work I would only be out $9, and if they did, then it would save me the $100 that Axiom wants for higher priced mounts. Unfortunately the Monoprice mounts couldn't handle the 19lb M22, and would always swivel down, no matter how tightly I screwed them. In desperation I even tried using a large set of pliars to tighten them, but no luck.

Despite how they're advertised, these mounts just aren't suitable for such a large set of speakers.

I've seen those speaker mounts and every time I think about getting them I just assume they weren't as heavy duty as they claim, but for $9 what do you expect. Thanks for testing them out though.

Hi, Ben. Thanks for the warning. It seems like a number of the reviews on that site are similar in nature.

One review mentioned something that might be helpful if you still have the stands:

There is only one warning I give... check to make sure your center post has its nylock nut at the rear of the center post VERY tight before putting your speakers up. I didnt check it and my speaker kept twisting down because of its weight. I thought it was the set-screw/thumbscrew that wasnt tight enough but it wasnt. I had to take the whole assembly off the wall and tighten that backside nut on the post. After that... Ive had no other issues.

Thanks Ben.

I recently ceiling mounted rear speakers, which weigh 8.8 lbs each. Due to a bit of research, I learned it was in my best interests to go "overkill" with weight ratings. So I tried Omnimount 30.0, but the holes to directly mount the speaker were fixed, and I didn't feel like drilling new ones thru the beefy mount. That was returned to Amazon, then my friend (AV installer) hooked me up with some 20.0's, and those were much more flexible, installation-wise.

There is immediately a tiny bit of drop that occurs with these, even after cranking the allen wrench pretty hard. Right now, it's angled just barely lower than what I think is ideal, but I can't be bothered at the moment. When I can be bothered, I'll hold the speaker up at a slightly higher angle while tightening, then I should expect the immediate little drop to be perfect.

There is no wire mgmt on either the 20 or 30, but at least the 20 (can't remember with 30) comes with a black nylon sheath that you can run the wire through.

Thought someone might be interested in my mini. :D

Thanks. I saw that too, but if you disassemble the mount, it's clear that the only two things that hold the mount in place are the two screws on the sides (the ones you can clearly see on the picture). The nuts on the front and rear don't have anything to do with this, so I find his comment somewhat puzzling.

But it was only $9. I am sure I will find a good use for them somewhere else.
