That's an interesting post and thread, Buck. You have always been quick to find and detail deals for us here on AH. 'Tis appreciated. But my mind wants to complicate matters.

It boils down for me...and I think many others here...we don't have unlimited funds for a/v gear. And especially with speakers, the data and spec sheets don't tell the real story. Even 'shootouts' and reviews merely suggest options. It is only personally listening to the things that can answer our question..."Shall I shell out my dough for this one or that one or which one?" Well, therein lies the fly in the soup. Even if you're an urban dweller (I am not) you can't possibly audition all the speakers available in B & M stores, much less the internet offerings, even limited by some budget bracket. And because of it all, Brand X speaker price is almost irrelevent. You've pointed out many interesting speaker sales to me...and I have no idea if they're any better than what I currently own. (This doesn't even take into consideration that speakers need to be A-B'ed for total conviction. How does one do that with a gubazillion different brands?)

Somewhere an act of faith must overcome the internal 'which is best' debate to finally drive a purchase. And how that's derived may have little bearing on sale price. Buying speakers in particular, I think, is just that...an act of faith that "these here boxes' are the ones I want. But (heh heh), since I can never be sure, AND there is always new technology, I'm probably gonna have to upgrade....frequently." ;) You really have to HEAR them to know. Oh boy...beyond that...it turns out that no matter what, every speaker has some trade-off of positive and negative performance traits.

Bottom line...buying speakers is more difficult than buying that house you're living in. Or so it seems to me.

Good cheer.

I completely agree with the original poster. You can find very good deals on non-internet speakers.

I have always had a hard time beliving those internet only brands can "blow out" traditional brick and mortar brands. Look at what av123 is charging for those Rockets, it's even more expensive than what Polk is charging at Circuitcity.

I have to agree with all the posts here. I am having a hard time right now deciding what speakers to upgrade my HT system with, if any at all. I have some PSBs I bought about 8-9 yrs. ago that I may replace. They sound pretty good for HT, but I think they stink for stereo. Of course, I listen to a McIntosh XRT-20 mostly for stereo which has me spoiled. No way the PSBs can stack up. I don't live in Po-dunk town, USA, but I'm not exactly in NY, either. Trying to find anything other than the big B & M stores with anything better than mid-fi at best is difficult. I have read tons here and elsewhere to get an idea of what I might buy. I sure don't want to go sideways or maybe marginally better and shell out a bunch of coin. I would just as soon keep what I have.

As for the internet onlys, well, some of them are not internet only. Some you can buy direct from also will sell to "distributors". They don't call them dealers. I just ordered something from a wholesaler that handles other things I use for my job (doors, hardware, automatic doors, etc) which also happens to carry some A/V for almost half what the speaker website says is their factory direct price. Funny thing is, they list their price as way less than "suggested" retail. If that is the case, I got it for about 38% of retail. Don't be fooled by internet direct folks thinking you are getting a whale of a deal, cutting out the middle man. In some cases, you are only padding the pockets of the mfr.

If you are at the right place at the right time, you can get real deals from places like BB, CC, etc. You just have to get out more. As another example, I was at Lowes a couple months ago and found vanities for 75% off on clearance b/c of new models. I an remodling most of my house and needed some anyway. Good deal for me! Speakers do not change as much as electronics, obviously, so last years model can be about or just as good as the current year.

If you don't have very many places to audition speakers around your town, you may indeed just have to take a chance/leap of faith and go for a set. If you are familiar with a particular brand/model, you can also ask about how the ones you are looking at stack up with the ones you know. Maybe plan a day trip out of town, even if it's a 4-5 hour trip each way to a big town that has a bunch of the speakers you want to audition. Look on the website of the iternet only folks for people in that area that will let you come and listen to their setup while you are there. Take a recording/movie you are familiar with for comparing.

Buck,

thanks for the tips on AVS. On what to look for.

Today I went to look at some Paradigms from a private party sale. I figure when I get a sub. Probably a HSU or SVS. I've got a pretty decent 5.1 HT setup for just over $1k.

I'm going to use them temporarily till I learn more about HT, speakers, amps etc. :)

Then I going to demote the paradigms to the bedroom and look for speakers with wiser eyes and more importantly ears.

On your suggestions

The missions look good though.. I've not seen many people talk about them though...

Cheers,
ed
