AVR Upscaling From HDMI PCM Signal?

My questions are as follows:
Question #1. Do I set Windows as 2 channel and upmix to 7.2 via Receiver (Dolby, DTS Neo... ect.) or do I set it to 7.1 Via windows Audio output and only have 7.1 from things mixed in 7.1 native? (eg. what are pros and cons of each)

P.S. What I mean to ask is should the mixing be handled by either the windows sound drivers or should the mixing be handled and/or upmixed by the AVR?

Question #2. How does my avr upmix a stereo signal and be able to separate the channels according? Vocals only coming through center channel blows my mind when I notice its upscaled from stereo for instance, Like how does my avr detect something as a vocal channel in stereo (is it frequency? phase?) im not sure but its kinda mind boggling.

My Avr is a Pioneer VSX1130-K for anyone wondering.

Easier to answer if I know what your trying to play on your PC, but usually you want the Windows mixer out of the...mix. That means that whatever software you use to play back should have some sort of WASAPI mode that takes control of the audio and bypasses the mixer. Or set everything to bitsream if that option is available.

I have it set to pcm (no bitstream available as far as I know), but in windows 10 it has the option to set how many channels you want output.

However it does no upmixing of any sort and in fact prevents the receiver from upmixing by sending silent signals on the unused channels in a mix.

A good example is I cannot get surround sound in a web browser as they don't natively support more than 2 channel audio usually (edge I believe is the exception) so watching anything in your browser is always in stereo unless upmixed either by a software or your AVR (im not sure about netflix or prime video but youtube is always in stereo for instance)

Set it to 2 channel and let the receiver handle everything.

After some research running the windows audio out in stereo and toggling the correct settings on your video player of choice will automatically bypass to the correct type of signal output. (dolby true hd ect...)

Glad you got it working. Those settings are what I meant by bitstream so I'm glad you found them.
