AVR/TV/Cable Box connections

Hello, I'm trying to set up an old 5.1 set of speakers in my basement to an older ONKYO AVR, Mod. TX-SV535 AVR... also in the system is a (gulp) analog Mitsubishi TV and a Motorola digital cable box from Comcast cable (I live in Massachusetts). Problem is that I can't seem to get sound to the speakers without turning up the volume on the AVR... ALL THE WAY!! and even then I can only hear faint sounds. The receiver works fine when I hook up a cd player or switch to the tuner. Right now I have the cable from the wall connected to the cable box IN, then from the cable box out to the TV. This is how this TV/Cable Box have always been connected. Now that I want to connect the ONKYO it seems that I can't capture the audio signals from the cable. I have tried connecting the cable box to the AVR using composite video cables, using several different options, all with the same result. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because I'm feeling really stupid right now. Thanks.

OK guys, I figured this out on my own. Thanks to anyone who took the time to take a look at my query and respond to my questions.

I'm glad that you figured it out, Angelo. Sorry for the lack of response. I, like I'm sure many others here, had company and activities for the holidays and didn't check out every thread like I normally would.
