AVR 5800 Setup W/out Remote?

Hey guys,

I'm new. :) I just picked up an AVR 5800 that someone had apparently dropped. I got it for $200 so I wasn't too worried about it. I'm sure there are people that would pay that much just for parts, maybe. Anyway, I'll get right to it. After repairing a loose capacitor and soldering a couple other things it will now stay powered up but I can't get any sound out the speakers.

As stated in the subject line, I didnt get a remote with it so i'm not sure if there's some setup step that i'm missing. I'm pretty sure that's not it though since even on the "tuner" input i get nothing. Also checked with the headphones.

I've tried a microprocessor reset, no effect.

It seems to select optical in number 2 for "DVD" so I just moved my optical lead to that connection. Still nothing. It does not seem to be recognizing any signal at all.

If it is not a setup problem, any ideas specifically where else I should look for damage inside?

Is there a way to enter the supposed on-screen menu without the remote?

Is there a way to do setup without the remote?

Is there an alternative to the RC8000 that has full functionality? (i've found the RC995?)

Sorry for the barrage, I just figured i would compile a list of questions instead of asking one at a time.

Thanks, Tony

I get it, ignore the new guy. Nice. :)

Well, I took it apart again last night and went over most of the boards with a light and magnifying glass and checked all the fuses. I didnt see anything obvious.

I have a friend with a denon unit, maybe I will borrow his remote and atleast find out if it's muted but there is no indication of muting.

After that it's off to the nearest service center. This scares me, I hope they are able to fix it and not just charge me a diag fee to tell me they cant do anything. $45 to look at it.

Has anyone ever heard of using a PC with an RF transmitter as a remote emulator?

Any input would be appreciated!

You might want to check the manual for that. These ain't toaster ovens.

My NIB Denon wouldn't make a sound without going through a setup procedure.

Once you get hold of a manual, then you should be able to answer your initial question.

thanks for a little hope! I just dropped it off at the "Denon Authorized Service Center". $45 just to tell me what's wrong with it. It's worth it though, I think i had gone as far as i could.

I did download the manual for it and go through the troubleshooting section to no avail.

Upon first inspection the guy at the service center also gave me hope by saying that since it seems like the processor is working anything else should be fixable.

We'll see about that. I'm still holding on to the hope that I can sell an AVR 5800 that doesnt make sound for more than $245. Guess i'm a pessimist. :)

Have them get you a remote while it is there :) Or pick up a universal and get the codes....

I talked to Denon support and they suggested any harmony remote but specifically the harmony one. They said it does everything the RC8000 does. Also gave me a file with hex codes to program in case I have problems.
I can send the file if anyone else wants it. It's just a huge excel sheet with thousands of codes.

Still waiting to hear from the service center about the receiver...
