AVR-3806 DVD-2910 HDMI Audio problems

hello, I'm a relative neophyte.

I currently am attempting an all HDMI connection. DVD-AVR-Television. I can get picture but no sound. I know that the sound is working, because I am also running my DirecTV (DBS) through the AVR and the audio and video are both working well.

I'm hoping that it's just a setup problem, but I spent about an hour last night trying different combinations. {One note, when I set the AVR to "AUTO" it chooses the EXT.IN (well, EXT.IN lights up on my AVR display)... no idea what that's all about}.

is there anyone I could call at Denon or anywhere else that could walk me through it if no one here has a solution??

Any thoughts? Also, would I get better picture from DVI or from HDMI?

Thanks very much!

In the Audio in section of setup you need to select hdmi1. I spent a couple of days getting the whole thing set up... Its not intuitive but I was able to get there without contatcing denon. I have hdmi connections but the picture should be the same for DVI as HDMI as its a digital signal. HDMI supports 1080P

Good luck contacting Denon. Three times I did it and they never bothered answering my questions. i still have problem with my setup, like the "video off"is on. I can't get the picture when playing the vcr...whatever good things everyone says about Denon I think their customer service is well below average. I've been reading and reading the user's manual for 2 months now and I still can't fully get this thing to work properly. I have to admit the guy who wrote it must not be very proficient in english or maybe as my wife put it, "you think you speak english but your kids don't understand you". Well english is not my first language... sorry...but surely Denon could hire someone who speaks and writes english better than me.

DVD-2910 and AVR-3806

I have this exact combo, and have no issues like this. Be aware that the multi-channel analog outputs cannot be simultaneously active while the multi-channel capability of HDMI is active. So you have to choose one or the other. It's annoying since I still have to use analog connections for SACD since the version of HDMI (1.1) that both support does not allow transfer of DSD signals. This means I have to toggle back and forth in the set-up menus of the 2910 to listen to SACD in surround.

Be sure that you also go into the set-up of the 3806 and assign the HDMI to the DVD input.

Analog inputs

If you have a high end DVD player (Denon 2910) with good DACs and bass management and play DVDs, SACDs, and DVD-A then just set the player and receiver to the external analog connections and stick with it.

If you only use DVD and DVD-A or have a DVD with low audio quality (compared to receiver) than the audio over HDMI is an advantage and reduces the number of cables.
