Avatar/Netflix/New Releases

I've had a couple Netflix movies I've been meaning to mail back for the last week. I put Avatar in my queue probably a month ago, so I signed on to bump it up to the top and noticed this:

releases 5/20/1010
What gives? Is this going to be a trend with new releases? Why would they purposely delay them?

I thought I remember reading that Netflix was delaying certain new releases for 30 days. Not sure if that stuck or not...

It did stick. Netflix made a deal with Warner Bros. There was a long thread on the topic a couple months back.

My guess is that studios fear that people will "Rent & Rip" the movies from Netflix instead of buying them. Same thing with Libraries. If studios were really smart, they would give the product away and charge people on the playback. But of course studios are run by spreadsheets these days.

Certain studios are holding back. Wife made me buy The Blind Side instead of waiting a month to get it from Netflix. As long as Blockbuster doesn't get anymore of my money i'm OK with it though.

if someone(most people) don't have an internet connected player, how would they activate it ? over the phone ? that could work, but would present problems of its own.

They tried this with DIVX back in the day and it was a big fat FAIL. With today's internet connected players however, things might be different.
