AV Receiver without a TV?

N

not this again

I just purchased an AV receiver that needs to be connected to a TV for set-up, but I don't have a TV at this time. I intended to use the receiver to power bookshelf speakers for music over WIFI. Is it possible to set up the receiver with a laptop instead of a TV? Is it going to work without a TV as a stereo receiver?

What avr? You should be able to use the panel on the avr for setup with many, altho not as easily as with a tv, but shouldn't be difficult for a simple 2ch setup.

I don't think I could get my laptop to work purely as a display but on the other hand I've never tried an hdmi from my avr's output connected to my laptop either, but doubt it would work....

welcome to the forum. hope you have some fun here learning lots of cool things about audio.
There's a saying here on the AH, RTFM. I don't remember what it means exactly but it does involve a manual.

Yes, you should be able to set up just about any new AVR without a TV by just using the front panel display, the remote control, and occasionally the manual. The TV display simply gives you a bigger, more descriptive view of the setup menus.

Will the AVR work as a stereo receiver without an attached TV: yes. There are 1,000's of AVR's running out there across the fruited plains without TV's or displays.

Can you use a laptop to be the display for your AVR? That's a puzzler. It hurts my head to think about that one so I will pass on either a yes or a no. I'm leaning towards a no, but, as soon as I say that somebody will have discovered a way to make that work.

Hope things go well with you and you get this workin. If you have more questions, be sure to quote the make and model of the AVR you have. That will help a bunch

the web interface GUI won't work if that's what u are asking; though i do wish Yamaha would integrate that feature in the web interface. access to the "On Screen" menu options is only possible with a TV or a PC Monitor, via a HDMI adapter cable. they can be reasonably purchased at Amazon, Monoprice, etc.

I did it for two years before I hooked up a TV. You'll need the manual close by so you can keep track of the menu structures.
However, I would really recommend you see if you can find/borrow a TV you can bring into your room for a couple of days while you familiarize yourself then you can work a lot easier without the TV afterwards. Also many computer monitors have HDMI connections.
You might also check Craigslist for a bottom of the barrel TV. They're probably some old 19 inch flat screens going for next to nothing! I mean Walmart will sell a brand new 32 inch with Roku built-in for $135 so there's no way you can charge much on Craigslist for used one that is smaller and not a smart TV.

Any computer monitor will work in place of a TV. That may be easier to find/borrow than a TV itself. Newer AVRs are dumping much of the front panel interface and are designed for use with a TV exclusively.
