Yesterday my husband was plugging in our new phono pre-amp (Cambridge Audio, Azur 551PS) so that we could start using our old turntable again. In so doing, it's possible he messed something up. He was going through the AV receiver's menu/settings, trying to figure out why - at first - the record was spinning and on but we could hear no sound. He eventually figured it out. But maybe he accidentally changed a setting with the stereo speakers in the process (for watching movies through the blu-ray player/netflix ap). All of the 6 analogue inputs are now utilized. He also wonders if there's some kind of power surging issue because of that, but i don't think so since Anthem is such a reputable brand (knock on wood).
We have our setup so that all movies are just in stereo (2 speakers). We're not setup for surround sound yet. We noticed last night that when in stereo the sound is fading in and out pretty badly. If we turn off the stereo and try to make it work with just the TV, we're getting no sound through the TV. That's because he presumably changed the setting to stereo, only, when he was trying to make the sound work re. the turntable. I realize I'm being overly-detailed regarding everything he's done (that I can keep track of anyway) but I figured the more thorough I am here, perhaps one of you will get a sense for what might have happened (?). He just now changed that setting so that it's back to working for both stereo and TV. The TV built-in sound now sounds fine, but through the stereo speakers it's still all wonky, fluctuating terribly. It's SUPER annoying...we'd all just sat down to watch a good movie in stereo.
I thought maybe he monkeyed with the surround sound without realizing it, but I don't know if the symptoms we're experiencing could happen (would sound bad like this) even if he did accidentally set it to e.g. a 5-speaker setup when we only have 2 speakers hooked up.
Do any of you have any experience with this volume going up and down intermittently? What might the cause of this be? The volume goes down too low to be able to hear words being spoken, when set for just stereo. But then it goes back up again - just not for long. It's driving me batty.
