AV Receiver troubles

So, my 13 year old pioneer elite SC05 seems to have blown a channel. The right surround back speaker isn’t producing sound.

I have checked the wiring on the speaker and receiver side. All that seems in order. I plugged another speaker into the right back Surround wires to confirm it wasn‘t a speaker issue.
I ran some test tones from the receiver as well. So, when I independently raise the volume of that channel to near max during the test tones I do get some soft/distorted sound out of the speaker.

How should I proceed from here gentlemen?
Thanks

Soft reset is simply unplugging the avr from power for a bit, sort of like rebooting. A hard (or full/microprocessor) reset should be in your avr manual....usually a combination of front panel buttons to initiate.

IMO, that 13 year old AVR without HDMI inputs is due for replacement. It's not worth wasting money to get it fixed.

Especially if a new board is required, which is likely no longer available. I'd probably just go shopping if resets don't fix it.

I would try a hard reset, but I'm not optimistic it will work. It seems the power amp on that channel has likely developed a serious fault.

A receiver that old is not worth the cost of repair. In any event there is a high chance parts would not be available. The service manual is available on line. It is 227 pages long. I note the power amps are ICE amps. These are very difficult to service, and this is where your problem probably lies. This trouble shooting section starts on page 61. Only a very experienced tech, with training on these amps, could begin to set about servicing it.

So, likely if a reset does not do the trick, then this unit should be recycled and it is new receiver time. The good news is that the state of the art has progressed way beyond the technology of 13 years ago.

Will do—I’m away from the house for the next few hours but will try the resets in the morning.

Regarding HDMI-this unit supported hdmi. It isn’t quite that ancient! But it certainly doesn’t support the newer codecs like Dolby atmos et al.

However,, point taken. If the resets don’t clear up the issue I’ll go switch into shopping mode…

Thanks

Got it, thanks.

Update:
So, I after Performing a soft reset….(dramatic drum roll)

It works! Somehow, the channel is back to full functionality!!

I think the one thing that would have definitely indicated amp/channel failure would have been the “AMP ERR” message on the receiver lcd According to the user Manuel.

Thanks for all your help folks.

However…I should probably upgrade in the near future anyhow. I just picked up a PS5 a couple weeks ago…

however, like others have said, might be time to go shopping. at the very least to familiarize yourself with the new technology.
