AV Receiver to TV with HDMI

I'm old school... I hooked my Yamaha RX-V463 Receiver (Output) to my TV (input)with the HDMI cable. Do I also have to run an optical or something if I want the sound from my TV to play on my receiver speakers? There's a play back HDMI signal option on my receiver. Not sure what that is. Can that handle my audio from the TV even though the cable is going in the input of the TV, how does it become an output??

Any help would be appreciated:eek:

What drives your TV? If you connect your cable box or satellite box to the receiver, and not the TV you should be fine.

I don't have a cable box or anything, I hooked my coax cable from my cable company directly to the TV.

There's no connection from the cable box to the receiver

You'll have to run an audio connection from your TV to your receiver and then select that input on hte receiver when watching TV and hope it passes the digital audio.

Many TV's don't pass digital audio from sources other than their internal ATSC (OTA) tuners so you may have to use the good ole red/white analog outputs from the TV.

It would help greatly if you knew what type of signal; you are watching from the cable. It may well be just an analog feed. It is in our area when running your configuraton.

Do you get Hi Def programs? That's a good indication you're got a digital signal. If not, you may need a cable box.

Yes I get digital channels so I assume I'm getting a digital signal. Sounds like I need to run a separate audio cable, I thought the sales guy said I didn't have to. But in setting this thing up it just doesn't make sense how an input could also work as an output just beacause it's HDMI.
Thanks for everyones feedback.

Run an analog audio cable to the receiver.

How do you know you're geting "digital" channels? Be careful here. Remember what I said in my prior post.

But, you're spidey sense is right on here. There's no way that HDMI OUTPUT to the TV can be an INPUT to the receiver. If that's what your dsalesman buddy said, there's a 50/50 chance he's either an outright liar or an idiot.

My money is on you're needing a "digital" cable box to get true digital channels and hi def. Again, are you getting Hi Def programs?

Also, a phone call to your cable provider might provide some answers as to what you really have.

In that case you will have to connect an audio out from your receiver to the TV, but you will only get stereo not surround.
