AV Receiver sound with satellite providers

Does anyone have a home theather setup with a high quality receiver using DishNetwork? How is the sound? Since switching to Dish Network the sound in from my Denon 2809 is a lot flatter. I have done the automatic set up. Is there anything else I should try? Dish Network recommended adjusting setup manually. I can do the speaker settings. But I'm not experienced enough to mess with the equalizer. The automatic setup does this part.

What do you mean by "flatter"? That word can mean a lot of things.
Also, keep in mind that Dish Network compresses their signal, greatly. This is no different than any other satellite carrier. It's a big reason I don't have XM or Sirius and am not a fan of the new "HD" (Read: Hybrid Digital) radio format. The signal is clearer but has many more artifacts in the sound reproduction due to frequencies being clipped or eliminated.

I was with Directv. I'm using the same connections, only one HDMI cable in line was changed and put.

Perhaps the audio settings on the Dish receiver need to be changed? Have you checked the audio menu on the Dish receiver?

By flat I mean it doesn't sound as warm and smooth sounding as it did. It's more of a bright louder sound.

ive only heard my setup (dish vip722 - optical cable - onkyo tx777) the sound seems to change with differant channels... on some of the high def movie channels it sounds great, but then on the standard def like usa, mtv, ect.. it sounds just the same as coming out of the tv speakers, just louder (my best discription of flat)

I run a 2809 with the Dish 722. Sound varies from program to program but it certainly does not sound flat. I was watching a DVR'd episode of CSI last night and it sounded better than most DVD soundtracks.

Most of the hi-def shows sound great. Is your Denon showing it's receiving Dolby Digital on hi-def programming? And if it sounds bright make sure you use the Audyssey EQ setting and not the "flat" setting in Audyssey. The Audyssey setting rolls off the high end a bit.

chas is right, ive noticed that the OTA HD sounds amazing, now that dish gives you OTA HD channels i wonder if its the some great sound...

use Dish optical connection with a glass fibre-optic cable (not nylon). Or use high quality audio cables (like Python or a high quality cable from a specialty cable supplier on the web)

Talk about a long time lurker! Welcome! I'm glad that you decided to post.

The OP is using an HDMI connection. That should provide the same digital quality as an optical connection. Right?

My guess is that it's a setting in the Dish receiver or like I said in your other thread they are using a different type of compression and it's affecting the sound more than DirecTV was, kinda like MP3 vs. AAC or WMA. If you start playing with the receiver settings you are going to end up having to change them every time you want to watch a movie or change the input as it will change the settings for everything. That in my mind would be a royal pain in a$$ and something I would not be willing to do. Maybe you could trade out your receiver for a new one and see if that helps?

Do you have any suggestions on a receiver with a $1200 or under budget? I have checked the settings in the Dish receiver (VIP 722K) and it is set to Dolby Digital. I'm still curious if there is anyone that has Dish Network and if they're happy with the sound what type of receiver are they using.

Changing recievers isnt going to change anything, if the sound is compressed from the source, it will be compressed on everything you have hooked up to it. As mentioned different stations have different compressions and so while one channel sounds great, others not so much. It's like TBS with their huge lip synch problems (whch they have no plans on changing) Best you can attempt to do, is adjust the EQ settings to get a sound you like.
