I hav yamaha yht 196 receiver and has connected it panasonic bdt 230 bluray player via hdmi.
I hav set bitstream and secondary audio off.my yamaha receiver doesn't seem to decode dolby truhd and dtshd on paper but when i play bluray selecting dolby tru hd or dts master hd i can the hear audio and can definitely tell the difference between regular dolby digital and dolby truhd as well as dts and dts master hd.
Dts masterhd sounds way better.my concern is why i just seeing dolby digital and dts on av receiver instead of dolby tru hd or dtsma on av receiver.if my receiver is unable to decode hd audio thn i must not able to hear audio when i select dolby truhd or dts mater in bluray disc audio options.
Am i hearing truhd and dtsma or regular dolby digital or regular dts even audio selection is dolby truhd and dtsma? Forgive me if the question is basic

Going thru the manual of your avr (the HTR-2064) it doesn't appear to have decoding for the lossless codecs DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD, just the core DTS and Dolby Digital bitstreams. Surprising but I suppose they saved a bit of licensing money? Look at supported audio decoding formats on page 57. You may be fooling yourself that you can hear the differences in any case; try having a bit of a blind test by having someone else change the settings and not tell you what they're doing to see if your ears alone can tell the difference....

So even when the av receiver is not capable of handling hd it can convert them to normal dolby and dts via bitstream.is that the answer i must accept?

So i must change it from bitstream to pcm to get any improvement in audio quality or it will still remain the same?thanks in advance

Yes, the core DTS/Dolby streams it does handle. Some reading about DTS here might help...

You might not be able to take advantage of multi-ch PCM with your avr either but you can try it. I didn't see anything in the avr manual that it would support such, probably would be indicated by multi-ch in or similar, or have you already done this and it works?

If set to pcm is there any other options rather than secondary audio

I'd simply try the pcm output (with secondary audio off) over hdmi to your avr and see if the avr handles it as multi-ch, if it does you're done.

I looked at your bluray player manual and it appears that it outputs multi-ch pcm in any case, although it could be a bit clearer (page 30/31)....are you required to make a selection for downmix? I'd leave it off to start if possible, or at least the surround encoded mode if you must make a downmix selection. Apparently when this unit decodes Dolby it is limited to 5.1 pcm output, which shouldn't be an issue since that's all you've got.

Good luck!

Thanks for your valuable advice.there are only two options stereo and surround encoded. By default it is stereo.i dont know what downmix is so i hav not changed tht.when i played bluray setting through pcm all speaker worked and avr displayed pcm and 5.1 speakers.(see if avr handels as multi-ch.)is that u were asking me?sorry if this are basic questions

You might like this guide detailing the type of codec and connections used but like the article you linked says, it doesn't matter where a codec is uncompressed, either in the player or the receiver....

Downmix would be taking 5.1 and converting it to 2.0....not sure exactly what that "surround" option does but if you're already getting 5.1 pcm displayed and discrete information from each channel, you're set!

You're welcome, this stuff can be confusing....
