My Harman/Kardon AVR 510 (around 9-10 years old) just died. I was thinking of buying another Harmao/Kardon product, but I here negative comments from user. I was looking at Denon 790 receiver; any recommendations on this and other brands, or comments would be good. I don't want to spend much over $500.00. Also, I never setup for 5.1 sound, I could never make my mine on placement of rear speakers. I’m now looking for small speakers for rear channels too, that will fit on free standing speak stands?
Here is what equipment I have:

Infinity Speakers INTERLUDE 40 (IL 40) Floor Standing Speakers
Infinity Center Speaker
Velodyne CT 120 subwoofer

Thanks

First as far as speakers you could look on ebay for a matching or near matching pair of infinity's (if you can't find the same model just try to make sure the tweeter is a similiar design from infinity). As far as recivers I own two HK's-a 235, and a 340 which is still in the box and has never been used. I don't like the fact that HK's really seem to be weak on power despite the fact that they are high current(the high current allows them to have extra power for transients but ONLY if you're speakers are well matched with the HK amp to begin with). Unfortunately even with a very brief test with a basic 16gauge cable my Hk235 was not able to drive my ascend speakers very well (and in stereo mode to boot)-and that was with 50w and as a comparison my nad 315bee 40w amplifier drives the ascends so well that I can not turn the volume up more than 1/4 MAX because it is so LOUD. I don't think the HK's are horrible or anything but to my thinking Hk receivers will give you better sound than say a sony,or maybe a pioneer (although I like pioneers brighter, detailed sound) but HK will not actually give you more power (except as reserve power/current which is useful only AFTER you have matched the HK with a speaker that has a reasonably easy impedance and also a frequency response that matches the HK well). I do think that JBL and probably infinity speakers are probably better matched to Hk than other speakers (which makes sense since they are all made by the same company).I think the best receivers sound wise are :marantz, denon, yamaha, pioneer, and onkyo. Due to all the complaints online for pretty much every reciver I have ruled out onkyo even though I like their sound a lot-because they run hot and that is usually not very good for audio components in the long run. I like marantz's sound best, followed up by yamaha, denon, pioneer. Because most receivers are now made in china and you hear complaints I've decided that if I buy another receiver I will probably buy an extended warranty to go with it. it seems Yamaha may be a little more reliable than others but that's not including their lowest models this year as they have shipped production to china like everyone else and I have heard a few complaints as to receivers being doa (although if you buy from a good dealer you can just exchange for another if you get a doa unit and I wouldn't be TOO concerned as I'm talking about 1 or maybe 2 reviews I read).I like yamaha receivers the best overall because like HK they actually do have a high current design and I like them because they will sound good no matter what seakers you match them with. I do think Marantz is a much better sounding receiver but that doesn't mean yamaha is bad sounding because I think they are GOOD sounding. Denon's sound good too-they give you some of the "smoothness" of the Marantz but give you lots of features that Marantz doesn't offer in their similiarly priced receivers. The pioneer I heard with some JBL speakers was very dynamic and exciting sounding but some pople want a smoother or more "audiophile" sound. I think a yamaha 765 or 1065 would be the easiest choice, followed my Marantz which has the best sound of the lot but fewer features than most, then denon, then pioneer. Just make sure to buy from a dealer with a good reputation and a very good return policy (like 30 days no questions asked, full refund or credit option) so that if you don't like it you can return it-and personally if you are going to be using the receiver a lot I'd suggest an extended warranty.

I owned an HK AVR 520 for many years and used it with a pair of IL40s too. As much as I like HK I can't recommend them unless the buyer is willing to wade through possible problems - this is with the 247/347 and 254/354 AVRs. Most of it has to do with audio cutting out and HDMI switching and upconverting of analog video to HDMI. The newer 1600/2600/3600 series is too new to really know if they are presenting the same problems.

You might want to take a look at the Onkyo RC-160. Its basically a 607 with 10wpc less - and no front panel connections. Also a few less features in sound management.

For speakers that match your (wonderful sounding IMO) IL40s look at the Beta line - Alphas - and the new Classia line from Infinity. All will timbre match with the Interludes as long as they have the CMMD drivers. A pair of IL10s or the small tower IL30s would work great. The IL30s would eliminate the need for stands. Beta 20s wouldn't match cosmetically but will match perfect timbre wise. I had some in my bedroom with the IL40s for about 6 months along with a Beta C360 center. All matched perfectly in timbre.

Funny thing - I'm an owner of Emotiva speakers and used a Beta C360 center - great sounding by the way - and the timbre match was nearly perfect. So you could buy an Emotiva 6.2 or 6.3 for a center channel. Both are on sale right now. The 6.2 may be all you need and it sounds great. I just sold a pair of Emotiva 8.3s because the 6.2s do such a great job. However I'm not going to get rid of the 6.3 for center. Its an awesome center speaker.

To yes - you may wish to read how HK rates their power amps. All of them are rated all channels driven. Possibly your NAD is also rated that way. Most AVRs are not. When you see an AVR rated 120wpc or 100wpc do you really think that is all channels driven? Read the full power requirements for most of those 100+ wpc AVRs. If they are drawing at most 500 or 600 wpc there is no way you are going to get 100wpc+ from that AVR. When you compare the numbers but don't decipher those numbers you come away thinking HK is underpowered.
The HK 354 or the newer 2600 and 3600 can go toe to toe with most any mass marketed AVR.
