AV Lag - Unable to trace the source

When we watch satellite TV, we notice that there is quite some lag between Audio and Video. It is not consistent across all channels. Some channels are fine. I have noticed this mostly on HD channels (dont watch the SD channels so haven't noticed its behavior)

Here's how I have connected the devices.
Sat TV -> HDMI -> Marantz Receiver -> HDMI ARC -> TV

How do I find out the source of the problem?

Have you tried running another audio only line to your AVR? You could use digital coax or optical. This may improve your situation.

Many AVRs can also add delay to the audio signal to try to match it better to the video.

Also, do you have any video processing enabled, on the TV, AVR, Sat Box? That can add lag to the video stream. I always use a direct mode or game mode to avoid video lag.

I disabled video processing on my TV and the issue improved quite a bit. There were numerous different processing video processing enabled.
However, there is still some lag. Not as bad as before. I intend to connect my 24" Dell monitor and check if it is still the TV which is the issue.
Will also try running SPDIF from SAT to AVR as suggested by Cosmin Char. But If I remember it correct, I had attempted this before.

Within my AVR I do have a set delay option, but I come from the school of thought that these should be in sync! :)

Just add some delay to the audio to get them in sync, problem solved! This is the exact reason that those settings exist!

But, if you still have some vid lag, then I would suspect that you may still have some vid processing going on somewhere.

If I am correct, this audio lag is not consistent across all channels. I need to observer more to be sure. Will check for the next few days and update here.

Basic physics...
Transmitting HD video is far more difficult than HD audio, as the data and required bandwidth is many times bigger. The amount of video latency is a function of each uplink and downlink in the broadcast signal chain. The audio will always arrive sooner due less bandwidth required thats why more and more AV receivers and processors are providing longer sync delays settings...

Just my $0.02... ;)

Are you using the TV as a source of programming, such as streaming or off-air broadcasting? If not, use the non-ARC HDMI port. Also, the AVR should have a setting in the menu for lip-synch. Set HDMI functions to AUTO.
