Nice forum. I would like to know why I would want my video outputs routed thru a AV receiver, instead of directly from video source to TV. I need more DD inputs right now and the nicer receivers I'm considering seem to have all video switching. To me its just another processing stage for a video signal and more cables. What am I missing? Using component, composite and possibly DVI straight into my Sony.

It's just one extra cable from the receiver to the TV, unless you use component video in which case its 3. The advantage is that the receiver switches all inputs and you never have to switch inputs on the tv. Its a necessity if the tv doesn't have enough inputs for all your video devices.

Some will argue that the picture quality is degraded, but that hasn't been the case in my experience. Recording is simplified as well because now all signals go through the receiver and it can route that video to any output with a recording device.

One extra note. You say you have component, composite, and DVI. Only brand new (and expensive) receivers offer DVI switching so that will probably have to go straight to the tv. If you mix and match component and composite, you will need a receiver that converts composite or s-video to component. Those receivers tend to be the higher end of most manufacturers lines, so that is an additional consideration as to whether you are willing to pay the higher price.

Thanks for the info, guess you can tell I'm kinda from the old school. Your right I do have to switch inputs on my Sony and then on my Onkyo. Its just another step. I have Dish and just got Voom installed for a trial. After setting it up its not bad but I do have to switch the receiver and Sony which I'm still getting use to. I would have to see the video quality comming out of a full AV type receiver to make a decent decision. Having a good time tho. Thanks for your time.
