Hi,

as the title says: does the denon x3800h support a 7.1.4 auro 3d set up where you have ear level surrounds and rears?

couldnt find anything online.

any answer is appreciated!

thank you

the last pic would suggest that you can’t. There is only a 5.1 base layer

If configured and powered for 7.1.4 with Front Height and Rear Height speakers assigned, NOT Top Front and Top Rear speakers, sound can be produced from all of the speakers of a 7.1.4 configuration when applying the Auro 3-D sound mode.

The Auro 3-D sound mode cannot be applied to Dolby Atmos or DTS:X/IMAX DTS:X tracks. There are settings in certain streamers to disable Dolby Atmos metadata to make Auro 3-D sound mode available for application when playing Dolby Atmos tracks.

For disc players, setting output to PCM rather than bitstream means that Auro 3-D would be applicable to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X tracks as the receiver will see only a multichannel PCM signal as disc players cannot transmit metadata when decoding signal for PCM output.

I noticed @Goldhasmter916 started threads on this subject in other forums as well. There was a poster in another forum showing pics of a 7.1.4 setup using Front Height, Surround Height and Surround Back speakers. Sound was output from all channels as the signal was an Auro 3-D/DTS HD track.

The problem with that configuration is that when playing Dolby Atmos signals, sound will NOT be output from the Surround Height speakers. A 7.1.4 configuration using Front Height and Rear Height speakers, NOT Surround Height speakers is the only configuration that will produce sound from ALL speakers when playing Auro 3-D, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X signals using their respective Sound Modes.

I appreciate the detailed reply. I read somewhere there was a update that you can use surround heights with atmos now and surround rears with auro.

That would be great for those wanting to use the Surround Height speakers with Dolby Atmos signals. If that is the case, Denon needs to revise their manuals. Surround Back speakers were already available with Auro 3-D according to page 291.

I think I should have asked about the exact model of receiver as all info I’ve posted concern the AVR-X3800H. There were updates to both models and some exclusive to one or the other model.

While I could not find any updates concerning Surround Height speakers working with Dolby Atmos signals, I did find an update enabling sound output of assigned Top speakers when applying Auro 3D sound mode. BUT, the update is exclusive to the AVC models according to Denon support.

You’d think that update would have been for the AVR models as more AVC owners would have Auro 3D configurations rather than Dolby Atmos configurations. Different regions, different rules. The AVC-X3800H manual does not reflect this update.

Those with AVR models such as the X3800H and so on up can change amp assignments and sound modes to discern which signals will output sound based on the combination of mode and amp assignment.

This information should not be this difficult to find and user manuals should be updated accordingly with each firmware update that changes a unit’s feature-set. Until that is done regularly and reliably, user experimentation will have to do.
