Does anyone know for certain if Denon and Marantz use the same microphone? I want to go through some set-ups on the Marantz, but the Denon mic is the only one I can immediately lay my hands on.
Thanks!

According to the Audyssey website, each mic is specific to each brand.

Do you think Audyssey is leaving it up to the brands to calibrate the mic's to their own specs, or do you think they actually know they are different.
I suspect you know, but Marantz and Denon are branches of the same company.

I asked them if could use the mic for my Denon AVR-4308 on my Maranta AV7005 both has Audyssey XT, the Denon mic weighs a ton and the Marantz one is paper light. I was told "NO", that doing so would yield improper result. They were very clear about that, no if and but..

I suggest you email them that question and they will respond within a day or two.

From the information I got from jostenmeat: (paraphrased)

Audyssey gives the software and information to each company, but leaves the actual implementation up to each distinct company. Some companies implement it a little differently than others even though they may be the same level. Each company is also free to do what they wish with the mics.

From Audyssey about mice:

Can I use any mic for MultEQ? Can I use a mic from my previous AVR on my new AVR?
No. To both questions. The Audyssey mic that was included with your AVR has been specially calibrated to your AVR model. Using another microphone for your MultEQ calibration will not produce accurate results. If you can't find the microphone that was included with your AVR contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

It's not just brand, it's the actual model. But it's kind of a reverse situation.

The mic is not calibrated to the receiver, but the internal correction curve of the receiver is tailored to the mic chosen for it, to "make the mics flat".

In the earlier days, the mics were often of the inferior "puck" style mics, which is what I have. Maybe that's why it was relatively so cheap. I had to buy it because when I bought it factory direct refurb, there was nothing in the description that says it would be missing.

I remember Denon mics were rather expensive at the time I was reading about such things many years ago. Maybe Marantz won't be as bad.

Yes, so you're wondering which mics were redundantly used among which models. Well I sure don't know, and good luck getting that info from mftrs. Firstly, you would have a hard time finding someone who actually knew, even across models but across brands whew, and even if they did, they probably wouldn't tell you as there's money to be made off you.

Anyway, if you like Audyssey on the Denon, buy the mic for the Marantz. If you were gong to sell either of them, it might be desirable to the buyer. Just trying to make the pill a little easier to take for you.
