Hello everyone,

This is a thread for pets. If we can have an official pimp name thread, im sure a pet thread would be valid. Any pet you have, spider, dog, or for the ladies your husband, share it with everyone. :p

Heres my pet dog, named mocha.

This little 75lb bundle of ugly is my 8 yr old Boxer Kip (short for Kipling, my mom was an English Professor). Sorry about the glare, her eyes always do that. She's not blind or posessed. I adopted her from the Humane Soceity. She latched on to me and became fiercely over-protective. I actually was dating a girl who got so mad at Kip for shooting her dirty looks everytime she sat next to me and for growling at her whenever she tried to touch me that she said either the dog went or she did. I laughed at her and got her her coat.

Edit: Matt I've always been a huge fan of German Sheppards. My second dog was a female King Sheppard. She's actually one of my first memories. Great breed of dog IMO, both smart and loyal, all you can ask of an animal.

I have a cat as well, and while I'm not a cat person my cat is irresistable. She plays fetch, demands tummy rubs more often than my dog. Sleeps by my feet, and is as gentle as a lamb.

The bed that the dog is in was originally for the cat (cat = 6 lbs, dog = 75lbs). My gf bought it for the cat whom she spoils to no end but the cat never used it. We put it upstairs for the dog and within a week no one could get her out of it. Now Kip sleeps till noon every day. My gf loathes my dog, it took 3 years for Kip to stop growling at her every time she touched me or got within a foot of the food dish.

Here are my 2 children:

Murphy (the stripped tabby) and Madison (the black cat). They have really changed our lives. We were trying to decide whether to have children or not and decided we would start with a pair of kittens. We think we're gonna stick with the kittens now. These are older pictures as they are almost 2 years old now.

I would post a pic but not sure how to do it. Obviously, by the signature below, we have two greyhounds that came off the Florida tracks. Unfortunately, within the next week or two we will be down to one. Damn fricken cancer, I'd give all my audio equip away for just another year   :( :( .

I lost my 15 yr old lab to cancer. But he only lasted about a week after being diagnosed. First and last time I cried since I was 12 and seriously hurt myself (I was 24 when I put him down). He was the pet that taught me the value of naming an animal carefully. No 19 yr. old wants to run up and down the street yelling "Happy, come back Happy". This was a lesson lost on my GF who insisted on naming the cat Prissy.

A couple of my neighbours have adopted greyhounds. They all go for walks together and have these sweaters for the dogs in the winter. I think that adopting a dog from the pound or the humane society, or the dog track is a great way to get a pet. There are bound to be some problem cases, but most animals are good animals.

That's a great philosophy and I agree. Why not give a good home to an animal that probably has had a rough start at life given that they ended up at the pound. I think you make an animal a "good" animal by the way you treat them. If you treat them well, like a part of the family, they usually develop a nice personality and are a joy to have around. Treat them like crap by beating them or chaining them up outside all day (for dogs) and you are just asking for trouble [not to mention that IMO you shouldn't own a pet if you are going to do that anyway].

Yeah, we found out last week. He is my first and has taught me a lot with interacting with people and the general public. He has performed a great amount of public service and will be missed by many people and not just us. We also did a lot of events at wine festivals. Too bad a lot of people never realized his tongue was in their glass while they gave him loving. Nothing better than a slimey Cab or Merlot :D .

Our philosophy has always been adoption (never mattered how or where). Since we don't show dogs we will NEVER give money to a breeder.

When I got Kip she was 40lbs (20-25lbs underweight, now she's about 10 lbs over), had mange, worms, and wasn't very house broken. The vet said someone used her to have a ton of litters of puppies and then threw her away. She latched on to me so badly that it was heartbreaking. I learned the first day that she could open doors when she walked in on me in the bathroom. I guess I was taking too long in the shower so she thought to check on me. She sleeps outside of the door of whatever room I'm in till this day. Her health is going downhill now but she is still in better shape than when we got her. 8 is old for a boxer I've been told. Then again 15 is ancient for a lab, so we'll see how long she holds out.

We could easily turn this thread into "amazing animal tricks". It's pretty cool for a dog that learned to open a door - but how about cats?

I had two that could do it, at least for one particular door between the kitchen and garage. The kitchen counter ran all the way up to the wall next to the garage door. I guess they learned over time by watching that the knob had to be turned to open the door. So they would get on the kitchen counter and reach over to the door knob with one paw and then in one motion drop off the counter and grab the other side of the door knob with the other paw. Presto - the knob would turn and the door would open.

Absolutely. I do just that, mostly from my vet's animal rescue but also SPCA.

Problems in amimals are caused only by two things, humans and physical illness (brain tumor, etc.). They don't just change behavior for fun. Food, shelter, patience and love will turn around any animal, every time.

Dogs are feircly loyal pack animals (unlike ourselves), so imagine your family taking you out to the forest, tying you to a tree and leaving you to starve or be attacked. Only a human would be so cruel and I'm constantly amazed by our ignorance and utter disrespect for everything around us. We deserve whatever we get. Sorry, hard to hold back the passion. Picks of the fam. coming!

My theory is anyone that can abuse an animal can abuse a person.

I do have to disagree a little with you though Audiosouce. There are some animals that are just not meant to be around people. I've had all breeds of dog in my home including 2 pitbulls I watched for a shelter for a month or two so that they wouldn't be put down. (to be honest pitbulls scare me and I do think they should be banned from cities, but these two were gentle and very well behaved, always glad to sleep on the couch next to me) I've only ever owned one dog that weighed less than 60 lbs, and it was the most hyper-aggressive and just plain vicious animal I've ever seen. It was this little 15-20lb wire fox terrier that I received as a birthday gift when I was around 7. We got him as a pup and brought him up right, but he was a bad dog. No amount of attention, no amount of treats, or petting, or training, or even punishement would change him. He killed my sister's puppy, nearly killed the neighbour's dog when it jumped our fence, killed our neighbour's rabbits in Germany, and attacked any person it though wouldn't fight back, especially me. It wasn't until I was ten and much bigger than the dog that it stopped biting me. When it bit one of my friends my parents got rid of the thing. To this day I hate wire fox terriers. I also know now that there are enough good animals in need of a home that you never need to waste your time on that one in a hundred just plain mean animal. My vet has a story about a guy trapped in his bathroom by his cat that is hillarious. This guy adopted a stray cat, and the day it moved in it started attacking him, and did so for months to come. He called the vet from the bathroom and asked her what to do. She said bring it in, put it down, and adopt a cat from the pound that would love to be with you.

I do think that some breeds are more predisposed to being violent. Terriers especially. That is why I'm a big boxer, mastiff, german sheppard fan. Big dogs with no terrier in them that were never bred (originally) to be fighting animals. For me a dog must weigh more than 40 lbs otherwise it is a cat that needs to be walked. I think for my next dog I'm going to get an Akita. I'm not sure though.

Sorry to hear about such a bad experience. My current pup (well, she's three but will always be my little pup...sniff, sniff) is a (best guess) 55 lb. German Shepherd and whippet cross. I figured out the Shepherd part because she'd see other dogs and yell out "papers!..let me see your papers!" She is extremely strong for her size and dominant as all hell (she attacked a Bull Mastiff once because he was too far inside her personal space, which is about one square kilometer).

One extremely bad pup that people thought we raised to fight or as a guard dog. She was so bad that she required the trainer to handle her when we walked in the door the first time and was taken out of class to be fitted with a "gentle leader". But the patience and persistence paid off and I found positive re-enforcement works better for her. She still requires a firm hand but is the most loving and affectionate animal ever. In fact, she's got herself a kitty to keep her company now and this cat kicks her a$$! I'll try to get a pic. of them wrestling. She'll even let him eat her dog food (he's a pig).

This guy adopted a stray cat, and the day it moved in it started attacking him, and did so for months to come. He called the vet from the bathroom and asked her what to do. She said bring it in, put it down, and adopt a cat from the pound that would love to be with you.
I don't know what to say about a guy afraid of a wee cat, but my family has never had a stray they haven't been able to turn from an antisocial scrapper to a prissy suck.

I do think that some breeds are more predisposed to being violent.
Agreed, unfortunately it's because we bred them that way.

Did anyone see one of the first episodes of Moster Garage where Jesse learns that he only has one pit bull in the shop instead of two. Jesse has the remaining put bull in his arms gently saying to him "why did you kill Rudy? I liked Rudy."

My Corgi

We adopted a Cardigan Welsh Corgi (there are 2 types of Welsh Corgi) last march from the national Corgi rescue. She'd been badly abused and used as a puppy-mill breeder...when we brought her home she was even scared of the TV remote control. She's getting better bit by bit and going through dog training. I'm with everyone previously that said adoption is the way to go. This is our second adoptee...and nothing is better than taking a dog who's been mistreated and giving them a happy life.

Anyway, here's a pic...
