hi have a general question. when i play a dvd the dolby digital soundtrack is very quiet compared to if i play a music cd on the same system. Am i the only one experiencing this problem ???

I have always been curious about this problem, is it maybe a sucky dvd player, i got a pioneer dv 300 i thought i was ok when i bought it.

There is a difference in the mastering level between CDs and DVDs, DVDs being mastered with a much lower average level (compared to CDs) to allow for a more dynamic presentation.

As an example of what No. 5 said, the average level of dialog in a movie is around -31 dB whereas a modern CD usually has an average level of -12 dB (I have some that are even hotter than that!).

cool thanks for clearing that up i had a sneaky suspicion it was to do with the recording volume.
