Audio through Surround Sound System / XBox 360

I have my xbox 360 hooked up to my 50 inch widescreen samsung plasma (got it last month) using an HDMI cable. I also have an audio receiver/dvd player hooked up directly to the tv using another HDMI. When I play a DVD the audio plays through the surround speakers/sub. When I play the x-box it only plays through the tv speakers, which suck. I have the receiver on AUX. Cant seem to get the xbox audio to play through the surround?

This sucks.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

You need to connect the Xbox to the receiver, not the TV. The receiver will only decode the audio from HDMI if it goes through receiver first. Audio does not travel from the TV to the receiver.

passthrough?

So I need a receiver with and HDMI passthrough, or and HDMI in/out?

What receiver do you have now? Since you said you had the receiver connected to the TV with HDMI I assumed that you had an HDMI switching receiver. You do not need a receiver with HDMI. You can use an optical cable for audio from the Xbox.

I had this same problem. You need to get one of those optical audio adapters that comes with the official 360 hdmi cable. First of all you will need it because the a/v plug is tooooo damn fat and blocks the hdmi port, which I'm sure you already noticed. I custom made my adapter but you can pay $50 and and use the one that comes with 360 hdmi.

On a side note, to get sound from your receiver and not through the tv, you have to plug in the audio cable first and let the xbox turn on. Once it's on, then plug in your hdmi cable. That way the hdmi will only be used for video. How do I know? I almost threw my 360 out the window until I finally figured it out.:D Xbox.com is limited on info about this.
