audio output confusion

Hello,

I have read both manuals for these devices multiple times and even looked online at the PS3 site and I just plan confused at this point. So here goes, thanks for the help.

My question is how do I set-up for the best possible sound with a PS3. I have a Denon 2808. PS3 is hooked up via HDMI cable. Settings for the PS3 are set up with the HDMI settings on. Music settings are on automatic for the PS3. I have done all the set-up for HDMI for the denon as well.

On the display for the Denon while playing a a dvd that I have set the Audio setting to Dolby Digital TrueHD all that shows up is MULTI CH IN. Am I correct in thinking that this means it's not giving me sound in Dolby Digital Truehd or is it? I guess since the display is not showing the Dolby Digital TrueHD, this is why I'm confused. I just want to make sure I'm getting the highest quality of sound.

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that the Denon will display MULTI CH IN when the player is doing the decoding and sending it to the receiver. The Denon will show Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital TrueHD when you set the player to sent the audio to the receiver as a “bitstream” and then the Denon does the decoding. At least that’s how it works with my 2807 and regular Dolby Digital.

Either way you are getting the same output just depends on which box is doing the decoding. Not sure which one does the better job.

First, I assume you mean a Blu-ray Disc, not a DVD, as DVDs don't contain HD audio such as TrueHD. Second, yes, the PS3 is decoding the HD audio from the disc and sending it out as PCM multi-channel audio to your Denon.

The Denon is properly letting you know that it is receiving multi-channel audio as decoded by the PS3.

You are good to go.
