Like the title states, I'm a total audio newb.... but the wife has allowed me to purchase a new receiver.

My current setup:
  • Yamaha HTR-5650 (6.1 system but I only want to use a 5.1 setup due to weird prewire in our house)
  • Toshiba HD-A2
  • Motorola Cablebox DCT6412 III
  • Sony PS3
  • XBOX 360
  • LG 60PC1D (60" plasma 720P/1080i)

So basically, I want something with built in HDMI ports that can pass audio as well. I want to wall mount the plasma and really only want one HDMI and the power cable visible (or hidden in a track). I want to be able to hook up the HD-DVD, cable box and both game systems with the audio going through the surround without any issues. I'm fine with a 2 in/ 1 out HDMI setup as long as the system is compatible with an HDMI selector switch.

I would like a 7.1 system b/c my back patio was pre-wired for two speakers & was hoping to tap into the receiver when we're out back.

I was looking at the Onkyo TX-SR605, which received a favorable review from CNET, but a reviewer noted that his HDMI switch was incompatible with the receiver and he would get intermittent audio blackouts. I've also looked at the Denon AVR788 .

Like I said before, I'm an audio-nub. I really don't know what a lot of the terminology means. I want to be able to watch HD-DVD's or BluRay discs as well as my cable and play games all in surround without having to switch out cables all of the time. I'd prefer to have them all connected via HDMI just for the simplicity & picture quality, so an HDMI switch would probably be necessary.

I'm really trying to stay under $600 if possible. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
