Audio inputs, no sound on Yammy 663

I have everything connected properly, DVD is co-ax and cable box is optical to the receiver. When I turn on either source, I get no sound until I go into the manual setup menu>input menu>and select the source.

I thought the receiver should detect what audio is incoming and output it. Am I missing a setting somewhere or do I have to do the menu dance each and every time I want to change sources?

Any help is appreciated.

Nearly all receivers require you to 'assign' the inputs. That is, you tell it that coax input 1 goes with the DVD input selector (or whatever). When you use the source select, you are doing that manually. Note that you also want to set the input format to 'auto' so it can automatically switch between the assigned digital input and the dedicated analog input (usually only an issue with cable where some channels are analog and some are digital), but that is the default 99% of the time so you don't actually have to set it.

i have an older yamaha (htr-5930) but was planning on getting the rx-v663 soon but i change my audio input kinda often and it just automatically grabs it from whatever source its coming in from so i think mds i right on the auto setting for the inputs... let me know how you like the reciever over all though :-D

Like it fine.

I like the receiver, of course this is the first audio gear I have owned since my all in one unit back in high school.

I have the inputs set to the correct jacks in the menu, I will check on the auto setting (I may have set it to coax/opt) as I don't have any HDMI connections yet, I just want it to grab the audio without a big string of menu hopping (I think if I hit the input button on the remote it will play properly, still learning).

Thanks all

That's exactly what you need to do. Pg. 42, Basic Procedure, Step 2 tells you this. But it is easily missed. Took me a while to find it.
