hey people, i just recently boght a wal-mart hdtv-monitor. On the back of it, it has a rca 3.5mm line out jack. The speakers r internal and they suck.

i was wondering if there is a way to connect my tv to my soundcard or the speakers so the audio comes to my 5.1 setup instead of the tv internal speakers?

The tv doesnt have a headphone jack or i would have just connected it through that.

thanks alot. appreciate for any help.

peace

edit: the speakes i have is logitech x-530, i believe they have analog inputs (3 rca green, black and yellow)

The 3.5mm output of the TV will be stereo only but you could connect that to the front speakers.

If the sound card has a line input you could do it that way as well if you set the sound card source to line-in.

i tried connecting my speakers directly to the line out jack. i couldnt hear anything

oh and i got a male to male rca cable and connected the spdif/in from the sound card to the tv's line out and the opposite happened.

i turned the tv on and i could only hear the tv speakers. but when i played a song in the computer. i was hearing the audio from the tv speakers instead of my pc speakers. (i want the opposite to happen)

Iron_bass, forgive my confusion on this question. Are the "rca" jacks that you're talking about like headphone jacks? You mention 3.5mm jacks (which are like headphone jacks), and those are generally used on computer speakers.

Also, what model of TV did you get?

yes they are like headphone jacks.

the tv is some local brand like SOYO. got it for cheap.

so i just tried connecting my sound cards spdif/in to the tvs line out and tried messing around with the controls again and no luck

I found some SOYO TVs on the web, and they have a stereo output. So, seems like it is not digital but is analog (just like MDS mentioned).

Does the owner's manual mention anything about it? You might need to turn the TV speakers off before it will output a signal through that jack.

- Some TVs require you to turn off the internal speakers before they will output audio to the line-out jacks.
- The computer speakers are self powered and if it is a 5.1 setup you likely connect everything to the sub (which contains the amp) and from the sub to the speakers. If that is the case then you would not hear anything if you just connected directly to the speakers.

That is bizarre and makes no sense. If the s/pdif on the sound card were an output and the connection to the TV were actually an input it would make sense but then only if the TV actually accepts a digital input and I have never seen any TV that does - especially not a very inexpensive one.

What soundcard are you using?

ok so i was reading the manual. and it describes the audio out jack as the pc audio but doesnt explain how to connect it to the pc to get the audio.

the only way to turn the tv speakers off is to mute them.

im using a sound blaster live. 24-bit.

on the volume configuration it says spdif/in. and the tv it the audio out jack. i know it sound bizzare but that is what just happened lol

The blue input says Line-In/Mic In/Digital IO. The Mic and S/PDIF sliders are disabled so it is acting as an analog Line-In which should be what you need.

Are the Line Outs still connected to the Logitech speakers?

If you'll tell me the model number of your TV, I'll check out the owner's manual and let you know if I come across anything that will help.

Okay, I'll jump the gun and give a suggestion based on one of their models.

Go into the setup menu, pick "Audio", pick "TV Speaker", and select "Off." Then see if you can plug your speakers into the headphone jack in the TV and get some sound out of them.

If the internal speakers can be turned off (often required for it to send audio out the audio outs) then going from the TV audio out to the sound card line-in and from the sound card line-outs to the speakers should work.

the tv doesnt have a headphone jack, unfortunately.

i searched all the menus but the only way to turn off the tv speakers is to mute it. other audio options are bass/treble and Mono, Stereo or Sap.

so right now basically the cable is connected from the tvs audio out to sound cards line in.

i called the customer support they r saying thats its a configuration thing with the sound card

Ahhh, by "headphone jack" I meant the audio out jack, so you've got it. The manual that I found has an image of a set of headphones by that jack.

Does your manual look anything like this one?

I just picked one at random.

Anyway, time for the drive home. Good luck. I hope that you get it working. I'll check back later tonight.

no the manual doesnt look the same.

actually i just found out the company that manufactured my tv is called
Prive and i cant seem to find any info about it (it is a part of SOYO)

this is probably the worst hdtv ever. It doesnt even have component and s-video inputs lol.

just vga, cable input, the normal 3 av inputs and an HDMI input.

I'd first make sure that the TV is actually outputting audio. You didn't answer whether the speaker system requires you to plug everything into the subwoofer (don't make go looking for the Logitech manual. :)). A simple test would be to plug the cable from the TV line out into any of the inputs on whichever speaker accepts the inputs. If you get sound, the TV is working.

I'd also make damn sure you are using a TV output.

all the inputs do go to the subwoofer. i tried connecting the tv audio jack
to the sound card's audio jack and i had no audio output (the 3 jacks
front, rear and centre) none of them gave any kind of audio output.

thanks for all the replies.

and yes im sure im using the tv audio output since thats the only audio output there is

I meant connect the TV audio out to any of the inputs on the subwoofer to verify that the TV is actually sending the audio. If it is a fixed audio out it you should at least hear it at a low volume. If it is a variable audio out, you'd have to turn up the TV volume too.
