audio dropping off for a split second Yamaha HTR-5960

My HTR-5960 seems to drop the audio for a fraction of a second 1-3 times during movie playback. While it's not a huge detriment to the overall viewing experience, once you know it's happening it is annoying.

I'm claiming its the receiver because I recently bought the receiver and didn't have this problem before. I'm running the digital coaxial connection from my DVD player to the receiver.

I'm debating to get involved with Yamaha about the issue. My receiver was purchased from an authorized dealer and well within the 2 year warranty.

Any one else ever run into this problem?

Watch the display when it happens and see if it goes from Dolby Digital to a a non digital display. If it does then it's the disc; I have seen this occur many times on my system using movies from BlockBuster.

What are you using for the Coaxial connection?

If you are using a standard audio connection it may not work properly. You should be using a 75 ohm cable. All composite video cables are 75 ohm as well as specified Coaxial SPDIF cables and subwoofer cables.

It is a 75 ohm interconnect cable. I'll be watching the display to see if it changes during the dropout.

I finally remembered to watch the display on the receiver and it does flicker to something during the sound drop out that isn't DD. It happens on all my disc's however, not just rentals.

I have only one DVD player or else I'd swap that out and see if the problem goes away.

Seems to be the DVD player. I only have had this occur on a few occasions and each time it seemed to be the disk.

Receiver setting

You might try adjusting the setting for the receiver's digital input from "Auto" to "bit stream". Then the receiver loses the signal it takes a second for it to detect the dolby signal and start playing.

Swaping the cable might also be a good idea before you hastle with sending back the receiver. Monoprice has some inexpensive, high quality cables.

I am going to try a different cable and or DVD player before hassling with the receiver. I really hope I figure something that works, returns/warranties are always a hassle.
