I recently purchased a DENON 1905 and hooked up a surround system. I have noticed a different in sound. I have a DISH NETWORK HD receiver, 811 and DVD player, SONY NS775V progressive scan. I plugged both of them into my 1905 via optical connections.

I have noted when I am watching movies from HBO off of the 811, the sounds are great, booming sub, etc, etc. However, with the DVD player, the sounds are not as dynamic and the sub is not as impressive.

Does this sound right? I know the DVD is a cheaper progressive scan and I don't know if this could be causing the problem. Does any one have an opinion or advice? I thought the DENON AVR processed the sounds and it did not matter on the equipment, but maybe I am learning, yes, I AM A NEWBEE.

Thank you,

You may want to check the setup menu on the DVD player. See if the output is PCM or bitstream.............bitstream will give you DD 5.1 surround while PCM won't. In fact, just go thru the menu & check all the settings, if for no other reason then just to familiarize yourself with it.

There's also the distinct possibility of a difference in input level between the DVD player & the Dish box. The volume may have to be turned up a bit more when using the DVD to achieve a similar SPL as when using the Dish box.

Just a couple things to check................GL

In addition to Zipper's advice you might want to check the DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) on the DVD player menu and make sure it is off or disabled. This could be a possibility as to why the satellite sounds better than the DVD player.

Hope this helps.

You're right. When the 811 is on, the Dolby P II light is on, but with DVD, the DIGITAL light is only on. I changed my settings and the light still does not come on...

The DRC only gives me options of standard and wide range, one other but I forgot it. I turned off the PCM and changed to DOLBY too.

What now?

Just for the heck of it, try a coax instead of optical connection to the receiver from the dvd. Plug it to your digital in and see if that changes anything. You may only have one digital in, but check it anyhow.
