Hi all - first timer here, appreciate any advice offered.
We have a home theater system, which consists of an Apple TV connected to a Sony STR-DN 1080 receiver that powers a 5.1 surround system in our living room; that Apple TV is also connected to a Russound 850 that powers pairs of speakers in 3 other rooms, as well as our backyard. I put a Toslink HDMI converter between the Apple TV, Receiver, and the Russound.
Here's our challenge:
90% of what we watch and listen to comes through our Apple TV: Apple Music, Netflix etc. If we're just sitting in front of the TV with the 5.1 on, no problem everything sounds great. BUT, whenever we want to listen to music throughout the entire house, there is a delay between the audio coming through the Russound, versus the audio coming through the Sony receiver. It's probably 1/4 second or less, but it's enough to be annoying if you're in a room where these two sound sources overlap.
As I understand it, the gist of the problem is that the digital signal coming out of the HDMI converter is moving faster than the analog signal going to the Russound - hence the delay. Since most of this equipment is relatively new <3 yrs old, I'm trying to avoid more big investments, but I understand that might be the only solution. For example, is there a device I could put between the HDMI converter and the receiver to slow down the signal and sync them up?
I'll take any advice that's out there. Diagram below for reference.
