Audio And Video Setup Dvd/cd

Hi guys, I am currently still waiting for my OPPO 981, ONIX x-ls and ONKYO 605 to come to my house. Meanwhile, I look around the internet and many people suggests that it is better to get an audio/video setup dvd/cd to maximize my system's potential (such as AVIA or DVE:Digital Video Essential)

my questions are, should I get those dvds/cds? and if yes, which one is a good one?

I thought I should get it, since I am learning about how to set up and "tune" the systems to the best it can be, I thought that these dvds will help me on my way

Thank you guys, appreciate your answers

The setup DVDs are pretty much a requirement for calibrating the video. They have a lot of useful tests for audio too but for simply setting the levels of each channel they are not strictly necessary as you can use the receiver's internal test tones for that.

AVIA costs twice as much as DVE but is easier to navigate. DVE has more test patterns for video than AVIA but you have to enter chapter numbers to get to some of them rather than just selecting it from the menu.

I have both but if I were to pick just one, I'd pick AVIA.

Ah I see....I thought AVIA was for audio and DVE was for video... dumb mistake on my part.

As MDS said, you really only need the video portion of either of them, as audio calibration is pretty straight forward. I still use my original copy of VE (not DVE) for video calibration and it works fine. The navigation even on VE was already not so good...but if you know the chapters and how to use the patterns, it is easy to go straight to them. If you just want the basics, Ovation (the makers of Avia) also makes another disc called Home Theater Tune Up and it is around $12-$15.

Calibrating the audio in AVIA DVD consists of channel identification, polarity tests, level adjustment, subwoofer, noise floor tests, and rattle tests right?

I am wondering what kind of tests is the most effective? and if I only run the basics, will it be good enough?
do you guys recommend me to buy the AVIA DVD for best result or the result won't be significant?

IMO, polarity tests and channel identification shouldn't be necessary unless you are trouble shooting an issue. Level adjustment can be done without these discs since your receiver will have test tones to adequately adjust all of the speakers and sub. I've never used rattle or noise floor tests. Pretty hard to avoid rattles with my sub :)

hm.... I guess I'll buy the DVD anyway, since I need the rattle test, I don't want anything to rattle too much since I am living with my brother and sister. My sister is very sensitive regarding loud noises.

Thanks for all your help guys :), I called AV123 today and they said my speakers should come before Nov. 19 and for my receiver, I have no clue when it is going to come since I emailed them and they told me it is coming in 7 - 10 days. That was 10 days ago. I emailed them again and their answer was "shouldn't be long now"
