Hey guys,
I currently have a 7.1 setup running in the living room but due to the irregular shape of the room the surrounds and rears are mounted rather high, angled down (toward listening area), and not in the perfect ideal angles from the listening position (room is open on two sides). My Onkyo receiver is capable of adding an additional pair of speakers for the atmos channels. Like I said my room is open on two ends and is about 15'x18' with 10' ceilings. Given that the surrounds and rear channels are already so high would adding the atmos channels in ceiling mounted speakers really do anything? Was looking at getting the speakercraft aim7's. Any thoughts are welcome and thank you for your patience in answering noobish questions.

If you're already dissatisfied with your high mounted surrounds, in-ceiling speakers will only make it worse!

But if you're willing to cut holes for in-ceiling speakers, why not get in-wall surrounds?

I am not unhappy with the surrounds and the reason for them being mounted where they are is due to the lack of wall space in the correct mounting positions for the speakers. I was just wondering if the ceiling mounted speakers would add additional depth and take advantage of the atmos capable onkyo that I have. Or, would it make the surround sound channels have a disconnected feel.

I dislike in-ceiling speakers due to the 'voice from above' experience they provide. It's fine for whole house audio/distributed audio installations, but is too severe a compromise on listener envelopment in an HT.

Few people here have a dedicated room. My back walls are all over the place, so my surrounds are mounted a bit too far off angle. While I plan on custom speakers, you may look out for different designs, di-poles for example, that may offer you a better sense of envelopment.
