Hey guys, I recently upgraded to a 5.1.2 configuration and I have noticed that when watching a move in Atmos, my center channel volume gets pretty soft in actions scenes and the voices get low. I have a Denon AVR720W. I have used the Audessey setup and using the Dolby or DTS neural upmixer everything sounds better than a true Atmos mixed movie. Am I crazy in thinking Atmos may not be that great or do you think I may have a setting wrong in my receiver?

You can just bump the center up 3db when watching in ATMOS and see if that helps. What center are you using? Is it all movies in ATMOS, DOLBY tracks too? I'm still stuck in the stone ages with DTS HD and DOLBY HD.

Do you have Dynamic Volume on or off?

In my experience, if you’re watching movies around -25 to -30 dB or lower, you’re going to need Dynamic Volume to clearly hear dialogue. Or alternatively you could boost the center.

There also could have been some anomaly that occurred while you were running Audyssey - a reflection or something. Have you checked to see how Audyssey set your center? Is your center on-axis vertically with your MLP? Is it mounted very low or very high?

Neither of these guesses really apply if Atmos tracks are the ONLY time you experience the problem. I don’t know what would cause that. Does this happen with several different movies or perhaps just one? It might just be a poor sound mix.

This may very well be the case and something I have indeed seen before. So frustrating when you're running in circles trying to figure out what's wrong when it was simply the audio track all along.
