atmos blu ray movie on a non atmos receiver

hello I've been doing alot of research and i can't really find much about this..

i was curious about dolby atmos

so i have a ps4 and i am using it as my blu ray player i have it bitstream (dolby)

now my question is if i play a dolby atmos movie does my ps4 even support that function

and another thing if my receiver is a non dolby atmos feature then what exactly happens?

this is the av receiver i have at the moment

I've watched some movies now on my ps4 that on the blu ray settings it says that it is playing atmos and on my receiver it is playing dolby hd or dolby plus ..?


does my receiver automatic chooses the better decode or????

Atmos is just metadata attached to the bitstream. Atmos audio is mixed into the regular 7.1 audio channels, the atmos metadata instructs the receiver on where in space that sound is supposed to come from. For example, 10 cloverfield lane is mixed in atmos. There's one scene where you can hear the lights buzzing overhead, without atmos, this sound emanates from all 5 channels. Atmos tracks work without atmos decoding, however, you obviously don't get the same effect.
