I have an older, lower model 7-speaker Atlantic Technology set (350 series) , but do not have the subwoofer for that system and plan to replace my current subwoofer. The room is L-shaped with the main rectangle about 18 ft x 12 ft. The side rectangle is about 8 ft x 10 ft. The ceiling is about 10 ft. The 350 series has a recommended amp power of 50-150W, 4 ohms, and a sensitivity of 90 db. The subwoofer that was sold in the 350 series was 200 W, while the 642e SB is 300 W. Would the 642e SB be a good match for these speakers or over-powering? Another alternative is the 422 subwoofer with 225 W. Or are there advantages in having 2 of the model 422 subwoofers instead of one 642e SB? This will be a front projector home theater application. I will have a Pioneer elite VSX-74TXVi THX-select AV receiver with the calibration ability to eliminate subwoofer standing waves . Thanks for any advice that you can give me on this.

You do not need to match the subwoofer brand to the Atlantic Techs - meaning that there are some better choices for subs at that price, including models from SVS, Hsu, Axiom Audio and Rocket.

Would it be important to get a sealed enclosure type of subwoofer since that is what the Atlantic Technology system uses?

Is THX certification important?

Is Velodyne's DSP feature useful?

1. No

2. No, do a search on this forum and you will find many opinions, most say it is not necessary.

3. I don't know.

Of the SVS, Hsu, Axiom Audio and Rocket models, what would you recommend for a budget of $650-$750?

What is the size of your room? For 750USD you can get some nice HSU units, as well as SVS. I would go with one of them over axiom and rocket. The EP500 is 1100USD, and the rocket subs are not going to get you best bang for buck in there price class.

For HSU, the VTF 3 MK2 is 699, which would be a very nice addition to any setup.

From SVS the PB-12ISD-V is 699, and will give you extention to 12hz... :)

Thanks, all. I've decided to get the SVS 20-39PCi.
