Not to shabby, except for the weight and magnet

Has anyone heard this sub, it is very cheap for a sub with these specs.

Well after checking out Athena's website there seems to be a typo on Amazon's website, it only 200 watt RMS thus the low price.

Howard Stern? The one, the only??? Pleased to meet you! I take it you're a big fan, eh? :)

The Athena sub is actually not a bad product. I've tested it, and it hit so hard, it actually moved across the floor. The issue I have with it is weight. It's pretty light (no doubt due to the small magnet and class D amp). The MDF construction may be 3/4" or 5/8" instead of the preferred 1". If you don't have spikes and carpeting, it will dance all over the place. On top of that, I'm not sure how beefy the driver is. With such a small magnet, I wonder if they tried to save a few bucks with an inferior driver. For the same price, you can pick up a BIC 1220, an Acoustech 12", or Cadence XSUB, all 12" drivers which are a little more substantial in the sub $250 price range. Any of these subs placed in a corner will give better than expected results.

Here's the specs on the Athena:

5 year limited warranty (Very impressive)
Power handling: 400 watt RMS, 800 watt max power (Impressive)
1 1/2" Voice coil and 28 ounce magnet (Yikes!)
Overbuilt 12" high-excursion Injection-molded polypropylene woofer with rubber surround
13 3/10"W x 19 1/2"H x 20 1/2"
(Narrow, but large)

re:Athena asp600 sub

I own one of these combined with F1s, ASC1 and a Yamaha 2500. The sub continues to impress me with tight powerful bass both in music and movies. It also seems to have lots of power available as the volume control is only at 3 out of 10 and the Yamaha at 0 on the sub channel. The cannon fire on Master and Commander is just devastating.

Thanks for the replies, I really would like to pick this up for the price but I have this voice in the back of my head telling to to wait and buy a HSU sub. James how are the lows on this sub? Bababooey

Re:lows

I don't have any way of measuring how low this sub goes but I am using it crossed over at 60 and there is lots of impact. What I really like is how it has provided a serious foundation of bass to my F1s without any boom. I have no experience with a HSU so I can't compare.
i think it is a pretty musical sub for the price and so far has delivered bass at quite loud volumes with no complaint.

An HSU or an SVS sub would be great, but if you factor price in and are on a budget spending $450 on a sub may not be very beneficial. If you are not worried about waiting I'd say just save and make a purchase that may last through some speaker upgrades as well.
