Just what I was going to suggest. I'll bet it has the caps on the ends of the binding posts, which is prohibiting the banana plugs from going into the plug.
In the past, I've had to unscrew each binding post hold-down. With the cap removed, you usually just flip the cap over and use a small screwdriver to pop the plug out. You can then screw the cap back onto the rest of the binding post and the bananas should fit correctly.
I believe, the plugs are installed so that those crazy Europeans don't think the binding post is an electrical outlet - as their plugs look similar to a banana plug.
