Hi, I currently have Polk Audio R30 for my Front L/R on my Onkyo TX-SR502b. I am planning on buying Athena speakers (F2 for front, C1 for center, and B2 for surround). I wanted to know how good/bad the Polk Audio R30 is. Also, will my receiver be able to handle the Athena speakers? Should I go for the F1, C1, and B1 package instead then? My current room is very small, but I plan to move into a bigger place sometime in the future so I would like to invest in some speakers that can handle the bigger space. I want to know how good the Polk R30's are and also if my receiver can handle the athenas. Thanks.

The R30 is a decent speaker. It can handle gobs of power, and sounds very good. Don't expect much out of the 6.5" woofer though. You need a sub, as most front towers do anymore. The R30 is basically a bookshelf with a tall cabinet and low bass port. It takes a lot of volume to get any bass from those speakers. The tweeter is above average. The R30 is rated at 89db, so it's a bit power hungry.

The Athena line is (I think) Klipsch's cheaper line of speakers, sold through outlets like Best Buy. They are an outstanding value, and are rated at 90db, so they still like the power. You're receiver is fine for that setup. Invest about $200 into a nice 12" subwoofer. For that price, check out Bic's 12" models, the Cadence XSUB on ebay or ubid.com, or JBL's E250P at ubid.com or an ebay store with a high rating. (I think they are better than what Athena offers in a sub - my co-worker has one). This assuming you don't have a sub right now.

Athena and Klipsch are NOT realated

Athena speakers are made by a Canadain company API who also make the Energy and Mirage line of speakers. Personally, I prefer Athena's over Klipsch as far as sound/build. Best buy only carries a limited line of Athenas Audition Series; F-1 but not the F-2's, B-1 but not the B-2's. BB has shifted their focus to the well recieved Athens Micra6 and Point5 series of bundled speakers.
