I have AT&T Uverse for tv and internet. I have had service issues for three years. I had an issue this morning and had a tech come out. She told me that I need to have the HDMI out from the Uverse set top box going DIRECTLY to the tv and NOT through the receiver (AN Onkyo 608). Then run an optical line out from the tv to the receiver.

Is this the set up I should use (HDMI out to tv with optical to receiver)?
Or should I suffer through the service interruptions and leave the HDMI to the receiver?

I would appreciate some thoughts on this and any suggestions for the 'proper' hook up.

Thanks.
Barry

It depends on what your issue was. If you were having problems with sound then the solution the tech gave you makes sense. I do the same thing with my set up because my processor has a problem with audio drops through HDMI. I switched to optical for the audio and haven't had a problem since.

Cable can't output anything better than Dolby Digital anyway so an optical cable works just fine for audio.

Okay, thanks. The problem has been with video dropping. She said that there is an issue between the Uverse set top box and the receiver. I only have one tv hooked up, but when the run tests, it picks up the receiver as second set top box making it look like I have two tv's hooked up. I will hook it up as you have and see what happens.

Thanks.

1080i

I went into the receivers menu and the HDMI option was set at 'through'. I could change it from through, auto, and from 720 to 1080 i and p. I set it to 1080i, then went into the AT&T set top box and changed that setting to 1080i. I will see what happens and if any other tweaks are needed.

DRM can cause all kinds of havoc, so what she's suggesting is worth a try. For some reason my DirecTV box will only output stereo sound if my processor is hooked up via HDMI, but when I switched to optical it outputs 5.1 just fine. DRM is a nightmare and with all of the standards and protocols with HDMI it's getting harder and harder to have a system that just works right.

Good luck.

Try all possible combinations and permutations ans see which solves your issues.
But, as was mentioned, if the cable only carried DD, no real need to run the HDMI through the receiver and no more headaches.:D

If the Uverse box has component and digital out, I would use that.

u-verse has had problems with sound and picture from the beginning when i had it i had audio drops all the time (hooked up through optical cable) picture wasn't and issue most of the time but i did find that using component cables looked better than hdmi cause when hooked up through hdmi the blacks where just too dark and couldn't see picture tried calibrating and just couldn't get it right but my TV is only 720p any way so component cables did just fine.....

Yep, they have known issues with audio, they did some updates not long ago and it seemed to fix my issues but all in all, this service sucks.

I do use HDMI through AVR.

My alternative is Comcast or satellite. I switched to Uverse from Comcast and my yard has too many trees to allow for good satellite reception. I'm going to try the suggestions made and hear and other tweaks and see what happens. But, this may be it for Uverse.

Wish I could advise you on AT&T uVerse. I only have horror stories of them. Verizon too.
