Assigning Inputs on the Elite 94

I was using the dial to scroll through all the different inputs/sources the receiver has. One thing that I just realized is that there are seperate input choices for HDMI 1, 2, 3, and 4. Of course there's one name for DVD. I hooked up the OPPO via HDMI, but setup the DVD input (or source category really)to use HDMI 1 input (which is also listed as a source category like the DVD)

Why does HDMI 1 still show as an input? Now when I get my BD player, I'll hook that up via HDMI as well. I have an input or source that reads BD as well.

Should I assign the BD source to HDMI like I did with my DVD or should I change HDMI2 to read BD (blu-ray) or doesn't it even matter?

It's just odd that they have sources and inputs listed as you scroll through, when you can actually assign the source to the same input.

As I'm sure you are aware assigning inputs is just mapping a source selector to a digital input. So assigning the DVD input selector to HDMI 1 is just telling the receiver that it should look for audio and video at the HDMI 1 port whenever the source selection is DVD.

So...how on earth could you have two devices assigned to the same input? You can't have two physical cables (one for the dvd player and one from the BD player) plugged into one HDMI input.

The receiver doesn't gray out or make unavailable an input that is already assigned because it doesn't know if a cable is plugged in there or not until it looks for data at that port and actually receives something.

Yeah I get that, but why do they have sources and inputs on the same level. As you turn the selector dial, there's the HDMI inputs listes AND DVD, BD, and so on. HDMI is an input, all the others are sources, so why are they listed?

It seems like an odd idea. If I hook up a blu-ray player via HDMI, why would you then have a choice of modifying "HDMI" and changing the name to Blu-Ray in the input setup screen vs selecting "BD" and changing the input to HDMI on the input setup screen?
