Assignable Front Speakers?

I'm trying to understand channel assigning to make the most economical choice in receivers and amplifiers.

I want to run a 7.2.4 system. I will run my front and center channels through an amp. The remaining channels for surround and overhead Atmos.

If I am using the preouts on my receiver, can I assign those for surround or overheads? If not, it just doesn't seam economical to waste 3 internal amplifiers. Unless they are used to help power the other channels??

You would need to look at the specific AVR as to how it handles this, since they do not all operate the same way. Typically you cannot reassign primary channels to other locations, there will be a specific set of channel which can be reassigned.

You'll need to let us know what AVR you have so we can tell you what is possible.

I just setup a Marantz receiver in a 7.1.4 system. It asked if I wanted to power the external speakers using the front mains (L/R) or a set of the Atmos speakers. In my case, I had bought a lesser expensive amplifier for the Atmos speaker pair as the final amp, and chose that option.

But, I could have picked the main L/R speakers instead.

I believe it was the SR-7013 from Marantz that was in use.
