Does anybody have any opinions or facts I should know prior to purchasing either a Sony STR-GD800 or a Panasonic SA-XR57S?

For a low end entry level unit, go with the Panasonic over the Sony. Don't power speakers that need a beefy amp - i.e. 4 ohm speakers or ones with low sensitivity ratings with either if you plan on running your system at reference levels.
