I stepped into the way back machine to 1971 at the Filmore West in San Francisco at
www.concertvault.com to see the Queen of Soul performing live tonight. ( spoiler alert- Ray Charles joins her for her encore performance of Spirit in the Dark)First of all if hi def and hi rez are your priorities stick with buying blue rays. However considering the analog equipment this was recorded on in 1971 the sonics are great but the video is a little grainy. The vocals are miked really well and Aretha's voice just leaps out from the speakers. Much more so than when playing a CD. I had never heard her covers of Love the One Your With, Eleanor Rigby and You're All I Need to Get By before. Love the One Your With was my favorite. She sits and plays piano for the majority of the concert and she has the same soul on the piano as she does singing. I would give the performance a 10 and it sure beat the hell out of just listening to a CD (not even close). I used a projector on a 110" screen and compared listening in both stereo and then with one of the Dolby upmixed surround formats. For this concert in my home theater I preferred the Dolby surround upmix. Here is the link:
