... Or will Samsung's recent UWB headphone/earbuds patent fail to result in a product launch?

Ultra-WideBand technology has the on-paper potential to stream uncompressed lossless & hi-res over-air audio without breaking a sweat. It's capable of data-rates and speeds that tower over Bluetooth. We could be on the threshold of the next step in near-field wireless communication.

Pairing UWB technology with headphones has already been demoed at trade shows. Relatively inexpensive UWB chips have already been in circulation for years and the technology's "body blocking" issues appear to have been overcome by engineers dedicated to solving its interference issues.

Samsung's January 2025 patent could mean product development in progress. But we've been teased by upcoming UWB headphones before. In this article I report what I've learned about UWB technology's potential for audio and some of its development hurdles and unfortunately, broken hopes from the recent past. But I'm going to remain hopeful that we'll soon be able to hear true lossless/hi-res sound on fully wireless headphones soon.
